Derrida is at his best in this slim book from the early 1990s. What is exemplified in the volume is not his signature ability to tweak meaning and structure but rather, putting those styles of thought to work, a remarkably dynamic examination of phenomenological political thought in the protestant tradition. Starting with an examination of Czech philosopher Patocka's political writings of the 1970s, D. makes his way through the ecstatic elements of phenomenology and early existentialism (Schopen...more

First of all, I don't know how to rate philosophy. Perhaps because of this fear, I've been reticent to comment on Derrida, though he is arguably the most important post-modern philosopher. This book is a "gift." I've taken special notice of Derrida's theory of incorporation in relationship to history- like reverse entropy.

So, I just got this book today (in Anchorage, of all places) and I'm devouring it. The second edition is a revised translation and also includes "Literature in Secret," which covers the binding of Isaac in more detail. Brilliant, brilliant, brilliant.

A book I need to reread and am holding such off until a later date. [Book: The Gift of Death] finds Derrida meditating on questions from 'Violence and Metaphysics' and other essays concerning the messianic and the Other. Good luck with this one.

The first two chapters of this short book are among the most thought-provoking I've read anywhere. The third slows down, and the fourth eventually peters out. A must-read, though, for sure!

I'm currently reading this for a class. It's interesting, although I'm not familiar enough with Patocka's thought (yet) to be able to offer anything substantial.
