Please give me back the hours I spent reading this book. Starting with the horrid title (because the fire is gone from their marriage, you see?) and ending after 300+ pages of dramadramadrama.
The main character, Hyacinth, is supposedly an artist in a happy marriage. Then suddenly she loses her husband and the custody of the kids (and of course finds that lost artsy side of herself in the process). I feel for her, but even more I'm annoyed by her whining and crying and uselessness. She seem...more

A really sad story about Hyacinth a young woman shy and artistic who meets Gerald whos in training to become a plastic surgeon and marries him, has 2 kids, and then he starts cheating with a secretary where he is partner of a firm with Arnie. Hyacinth in her jealous outrage goes to his office one night and ransacks it and fleeing the building trips and falls and looses some contents of her handbag. Gerald later finds the contents that she droped. This is after a terrible fire that happens on t...more
Excellent writing, but the story... can women be so DUMB. Every page I'm expecting Hyacinth to stand up and call her husband's bluff, but she meekly stands by allowing her life to be ruined. Don't teach your daughter's to live their lives like her.
The travails of a woman caught in a devastating lie by her ex-husband, who holds it over her head to get custody of their two children. From this point on, her whole life is tied up in more lies to protect her "secret"
Belva Plain is a good writer, but this book was terribly depressing. There was no hope until about 10 pages from the end...and LOTS of "oh no!'s" Horrible...do not recommend it simply because of content.
I hated Gerald all the way through the book. I was hoping he would drive off a cliff. It was to bad that a horse hadn't fallen on Arnie.

Couldn't get through the third chapter. Too many type-o's and poorly written. Too bad.
This was not a great book, but an easy read and kept my attention.
This too was a good travel book. Quick read with a strong plot.
Fear of the truth keeps you from persuing the truth.
Good story, but long to get to the point.
Really deep character development. I could identify with her main character.
Good book.
Good book.
Finished. ~~~~~~~
if you're bored...
It was a bit slow moving at times but over all I fould it to be a good story. Things aren't always what they seem. I found myself making false assumptions while reading the book. I was totally surprised when the person responsible for trying to control her life turns out to be someone she trusted.
THIS WAS A GOOD BELVA PLAIN BOOK. SHE IS ALWAYS A NICE BREAK FROM MYSTERIES.
couldn't make past one page with all the grammatical errors. Sad
I liked this book...it wasn't predictable.
