One thing is clear about John Gardner, the editor of this edition: he doesn't care for pyrotechnics or experiments. Just about every story in this collection felt like the work of a capital-S Storyteller, as opposed to, say, a technician, a profiler, or an avant-gardist. Most had all of the standard hallmarks of a well-crafted story: a transparent, unassuming style, solid pacing, an eye for the revealing detail, etc. As such, the collection was unusually consistent in terms of quality, if a bit ...more

I've been waiting a long time to write this.


I have had a real strange relationship with “The Best American Short Stories” 1982.


First, I should start of and admit that I had more than just a casual interest in John Gardner.


Before I even picked up 1982, Gardner interested me.


His introduction pulled me in. The fact that he was going to exclude “New Yorker” type of stories and give me some real meat – excited me.
