Tor Classics are affordably-priced editions designed to attract the young reader. Original dynamic cover art enthusiastically represents the excitement of each story. Appropriate "reader friendly" type sizes have been chosen for each title--offering clear, accurate, and readable text. All editions are complete and unabridged, and feature Introductions and Afterwords. This edition of A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur's Court includes an Introduction, Biographical Note, and Afterword by R. L. Fisher. It was one heck of a punch. Knocked me clear from New England to Olde England, from Connecticut--to Camelot. Suddenly, there I was--with King Arthur, Launcelot, Morgan le Fay, and that faker, Merlin. I was trapped in the sixth century, surrounded by jousts and chivalry and idiots in armor bashing other idiots in armor! But I'm resourceful; I looked for opportunities. And King Arthur's court needed a few improvements. Like soap. Toothpaste. Baseball. Electricity, factories, newspapers, telephones, trains, bicycles...free elections. in short, these folks need a double dose of good ole American know-how.They needed a Boss. They needed--Me.

The novel tells of Hank Morgan, a 19th century Hartford citizen, who awakens to find himself inexplicably transported in time to medieval England at the time of King Arthur in 528.
The story begins in a 1st person narrative in Warwick Castle, where a man details his recollection of a tale told to him by a "curious stranger" who is personified as a Knight thru his language & familiarity with armor.
After a brief tale of Sir Launcelot slaying two giants from the 3rd-person narrative, a man named Hank Morgan enters &, given whiskey by the narrator, is persuaded to reveal more of his story. Described thru 1st-person narrative as a man familiar with firearms & machinery, Hank is a man who'd become a superintendent due to proficiency in firearms manufacturing. He describes the beginning of his tale by illustrating details of a disagreement with his subordinates, where he sustained a head injury from a "crusher" to the head caused by a man named Hercules using a crowbar. After passing out from the blow, Hank describes waking up underneath an oak tree in rural Camelot where a Knight questions him for trespassing upon his land, & after establishing rapport, leads him to the castle.
Hank is ridiculed at Arthur's court for his strange appearance & sentenced by Arthur's court, particularly by Merlin, to burn at the stake. By a stroke of luck, the date of the burning coincides with a historical solar eclipse of 528, which Hank had learned about in his own time.
All Connecticut Yankees memorizes eclipse dates, so Hank knew of it. Recalling this fact, Hank uses it to convince King & commoners that he possesses great power, by making it seem that he causes the eclipse of the sun at the moment when he is about to be burned. He's liberated, given the position of principal minister to the King & treated by all with utmost awe. His celebrity brings him a new title: "The Boss."
After being made Boss, Hank learns about medieval practices & superstitions. With his superior knowledge, he's able to outdo the fake sorcerers & miracle-working church officials. This causes Merlin to become jealous of the sway he has over the minds of others, as well as the power he wields as the Boss. Despite being a high court officer, Hank is willing to go among the people in order to promote new economic policies based on capitalism as well as democratic & modern principles. Arthur chooses to join him on one of these excursions, during which he chooses to expose himself to smallpox in order to help a peasant boy. Despite this kingly act, he is unwilling to move away from medieval ways of thinking. He eventually causes the arrest of the incognito Hank & himself because he is unable to stop acting like a nobleman. Hank's plotting is able to free them when a group of bicycle-riding knights comes to their rescue.
Hank as Boss has been using his knowledge to industrialize the country behind the back of the rest of the ruling class. For this purpose, he set up schools which taught modern ideas & English, thereby removing the new generation from medieval concepts. He also caused the construction of factories, which produced modern tools & weapons. He also gets married to a girl whom he saved from a couple of pig farmers. They have a daughter together. While on vacation with his family in France, he receives a message that Arthur has died fighting his rebellious nephew Mordred. Hank establishes a republic & declares himself ruler, but the people revolt. The most harrowing section of the book describes the use of modern weapons such as gatling guns, dynamite & electric fences by Hank & his henchmen to annihilate an army of knights. Merlin uses a spell to put Hank to sleep until he returns to his own time.

Hank Morgan awakens one morning to find he has been transported from nineteenth-century New England to sixth-century England and the reign of King Arthur and the Knights of the Round Table. Morgan brings to King Arthur’s utopian court the ingenuity of the future, resulting in a culture clash that is at once satiric, anarchic, and darkly comic.

Critically deemed one of Twain’s finest and most caustic works, A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur’s Court is both a delightfully entertaining story and a disturbing analysis of the efficacy of government, the benefits of progress, and the dissolution of social mores. It remains as powerful a work of fiction today as it was upon its first publication in 1889.
