Ninety-Three by Victor Hugo is a glorious romantic imagining of an episode from the year 1793, during the French Revolution and the year of the Great Terror. The setting is Brittany where counter-revolutionary forces have risen up to oppose the Revolutionary leaders. The leader of this group, the aged Marquise de Lantenac, is a romantic hero in the grandest sense. Has a copy to sell/swap
It's not especially easy to find a decent English-language edition of this novel. The first copy that I bought is rife with typos, including one right on the spine! In spite of this, I thoroughly enjoyed this great if neglected novel by one of the genre's true Old Masters (even if he is revered more as a poet in his own country). The characters are memorable, the amount of historical detail is almost beyond belief, and the dialogue crackles when personalities and ideas clash. Snobs may remar...more

Que dire de ce livre? Pour résumer, ce roman a été écrit par Victor Hugo.
On y retrouve de grandes idées hugoliennes: le rôle de la Révolution française, la morale et la politique vues au XIXème siécle.
Cet écrivain, et ses oeuvres, ont traversé les époques grâce à son sens de la description des personnages, des lieux et d'un penchant inégalé pour le romantisme engagé.
