Ninety-Three by Victor Hugo is a glorious romantic imagining of an episode from the year 1793, during the French Revolution and the year of the Great Terror. The setting is Brittany where counter-revolutionary forces have risen up to oppose the Revolutionary leaders. It's not especially easy to find a decent English-language edition of this novel. The first copy that I bought is rife with typos, including one right on the spine! In spite of this, I thoroughly enjoyed this great if neglected novel by one of the genre's true Old Masters (even if he is revered more as a poet in his own country).
