Wanted: Wife of good family, attractive but not too beautiful, calm, reasonable and mature...for marriage of convenience. Pleasant conversationalist preferred but not required.

Simon "Devil" Dure is as cynical about love as spirited Charity Emerson is innocent of it. But she is certain she can meet his wifely expectations, and he is charmed and amused enough to believe her.

3.5 Stars! This was picked for my March Pick-It-For-Me over in Western and Medieval Romance Lovers. I'd never tried this author before, but it was a Goodwill bargain I didn't pass up. This story was a light, fluffy one, not really any angst, a mystery, but easy to figure out, and the danger never felt too close, even when the villain kidnapped Charity and was attempting murder. I liked it though. There were more than a few parts that had me laughing, I liked Charity and her spunky-ness. Sure, sh ...more

I started off liking this book a lot. Charity came off bold and strong. She made a proposition to Lord Dure to marry her instead of her sister (who is in love with another man). So he accepts it. Once they go out officially into society, another man pushes up on her. So of course, her fiance do not like this guy (we later find out it was for good reasons). My thing is that she continues to see this man knowing that Dure doesn't like him. Her excuse is that she don't want him to think that he can ...more

For me there are decidedly two categories of Candace Camp novels - one is a number of very witty, fun books - notably the Matchmaker series, whereas the other group of books just don't quite make it for me. This one falls into the second category. My main gripe is the heroine - far too young, but terribly clever and naive at the same time. Her foot-stamping refusal to avoid a man her fiancé warns her about is simply annoying. As she is so irritating, the hero loses credibility in my eyes - he li ...more
Suddenly by Candace Camp is about a young woman who offers her hand in marriage to Duke Dure to save her sister from a loveless marriage.

This was a really cute book and a very light read for me. I really enjoyed Ms. Camp's description of Charity and Lord Dure. I liked that Charity would take any steps that she needed to get the man that she desired even if in the beginning the marriage was supposed to be one of convenience. There was a bit of suspense in the book also to help balance the sweetn
Actual rating 2 stars.

A quick read (I finished it in about 3 hours or so) that a lot of people may enjoy more than I did. I'm not saying that I didn't like the book at all, but let's be honest and state that there are a lot better historical romances out there...

More of my thoughts regarding Suddenly can be found on my book blog.

In order to save her sister from a loveless marriage, Charity Emerson sneaks out of her family home whilst her mother and sisters sleep and proposes marriage to the Earl of Dure. Needless to say this heroine had spunk!!! Charity convinces Simon Dure that she would be willing to marry him because unlike her sister, she herself does not need love. However from the very beginning, it is clear to see that the two were falling in love with each other. Charity made Simon laugh and he in turn would do ...more

Just finished rereading this book on my kindle. It is still a favorite. It is such a pleasure visiting old friends ;D

Simon "Devil" Dure is as cynical about love as spirited Charity Emerson is innocent of it. But she is certain she can meet his wifely expectations, and he is charmed and amused enough to believe her. Their ensuing engagement is as shocking as it is conspiratorial. With her crazy schemes and her warm laughter, Charity tempts Simon--with more than her body.
Her loving heart seduces
Simon was looking for a wife. He wanted a partner who could give him an heir and let him go about his life without much interference. He did NOT want love. It was rumored that Simon was going to offer for Charity's sister. Her sister was in love with someone else, so Charity told Simon to offer for her instead. Over the course of their engagement rumors and spurned lovers tried to come between Simon and Charity.

I really enjoyed this book. You couldn't help but fall in love with Simon. And while

"Now the story may seem a little dated and the plot line familiar but if you consider the fact that Suddenly was originally released in 1996 then it should amaze you that this title is able to stand out and get a new issue for a new set of readers. Ms. Camp had added twists, interesting secondary characters, and wonderful dialogue to set this story apart. It is delicious at times and enjoyable and age doesn’t diminish that fact."

This was a fairly enjoyable read for me. It maybe wasn't quite as enthralling as Impulse, but I really liked the two main characters, the sheltered but high-spirited Charity Emerson (despite her naiveté about the loathsome scoundrel Faraday Reed, and the dangerous Theodora Graves). And then there was Simon, the cynical and mysterious Earl of Dure, who even with his own flaws, was a likeable sort of hero. And Charity more than makes up for her own faults with her love of animals, her sympathies f ...more
My copy of this book had a blue cover and was pretty new, so I'm assuming it's a reissue.

The story was weak. Charity seemed fun and bubbly but definitely every one of her eighteen years (if that). I have rarely felt that a main character was so immature. Her feelings for Dure seemed like a historical romance version of Bieber fever. Not to mention her tendency towards TSTL behavior.
Dure gets low marks as well for being so hot for an eighteen year old who acts 14. I mean, really. Ew.

This book was thoroughly enjoyable from the beginning I really enjoyed how bold and honest she made the heroine right at the start and just had the usual annoyance of not telling somebody something they needed to know in order to prorect you cause you thought it would hurt them worse but in all I really enjoyed the leads interaction

Not only was the heroine naive... She was incredibly so to the point of stupidity. Her naiveté made me throw the book aside and due to boredom, i picked it up again and found myself intrigued with the murder mystery plot of the book. Thats the only thing that kept me interested to finish it.

Fabulously written. Humorous, charming, and easy to read. Charity and Simon are great as well.
