Book 4. Brianna and Roger join Claire and Jamie. Not so much easy going.

Brianna really annoys me. I'm not sure if it's the character, or if it's that I listened to this book on CD and the actress's voicing of her annoyed me (in general, I love Davina Porter's readings of these books, she's spot-on for both Claire and Jamie ... but her Boston-that-isn't-really-Boston accent for Brianna grates on me). Perhaps if I'd read-read it instead of listened to it, Brianna wouldn't irritate me so mu...more

The Outlander series is definitely one of my most recommencded series of books. I might even love these books more than Harry Potter - and that's saying something.

The Outlander books are set in the 1700s. They start off in Scotland, but later travel to Paris, Jamaica and the American Colonies.

Claire and Jamie, the book's two main characters are fantastic. They're deep, smart and action-oriented, yet very real. As their relationship evolves over the series of books, it evolves realist...more

Book 4 of The Outlander series

Diana Gabaldon’s fans will be delighted to find Jamie and Claire as spirited and endearing as ever in this fourth installment of this magnificent saga. Romance, history, and time travel blend once again as the couple builds a new life together in the wilderness of pre-Revolutionary America. Twice Claire has used an ancient stone circle to travel back to the 18th century. The first tim...more

Diana Gabaldon is an amazing story teller. I really enjoyed this the fourth installment in the Outlander series.

I don't know what I could say about this book that someone hasn't already said. I will add my two cents and say that I like the character Brianna. I think that it's important to put into perspective that she comes from a time when people aren't considered adults at the ripe old age of seventeen. And she has been given a lot to deal with in a short period of time, she seems a b...more

I too, am one of those folks that was totally in love with Outlander and, despite some rather graphic violence, thought it was a good enough book that I have continued to read the series up to this one. Unforunately, like most series, this one does not get better. By this book DG is reusing plots that we've already seen and the characters are becoming two dimensional caricatures of themselves. Jamie, the tough masculine hero, Claire, the strong and fiesty woman that knows how to handle her man, ...more

Our happy protangonists have settled down and so we turn to the youth to see how they are doing back in the future. Jamie's daughter gets it into her head that to correct a future timeline she must return to save her mother and meet her real father. Her boyfriend later follows. There are scenes to warm the heart for those of us who have read the last three volumes consecutively. Characters we are well familiar with reappear and interact with the diligent offspring to the reader's glee. In fact, ...more

I am currently re-reading the Outlander series...so I have rated all of them in advance. I normally do not enjoy such detailed historical fiction, but Gabaldon's research is unparalleled. Each book ranges from 700-1000 pages, so none are quick reads irregardless of the exhaustive attention to detail she has given. However, the adventure and characterization is worth the time and effort. As I have not felt compelled to devote this school year to my own writing, I decided this winter to revisit th...more

Drums if the 4th book in Jamie and Claire series.

They start their new life in the colonies. They have a small fortune in gem stones that they intend to use to get established, but a pirate named Bonnet steals them leaving them with nothing.

Except that Jamie's aunt Jocasta is a very wealthy plantation owner, but Jamie doesn't want to be his aunt's (paw), so he takes up the Governor's offer of a large land grant in the high mountains (Fraser's Ridge).

In the meantime, Breanna is looking...more

This is the fourth in the currently six book series.

These are my favorite series of books, I think, although it's a toss up when I'm listening to the Harry Potter series...then they they are my favorite! I love the narrator, Davina Porter, of the unabridged series. She has a wonderful voice, a talent for accents and adds so much to these stories.

The saga of Clare and Jamie continues in the Colonies in the 1770s. As they build up their homestead in the hills of South Carolina, their ...more

I was disappointed in this book because I loved the three before it so much. The first 3, it only took me 200 pages at the very most for me to be completely absorbed and unable to put the books down to even sleep. But this one, it took nearly 600 pages for me to feel like it was starting to get interesting. And much to my dismay the feeling did not last. I struggled throught the last 100 pages as the story seemed to drag on unnecessarily. I really want to finish the series but after this book, I...more

This was the first in the series I found hard to plow through. Jamie and Claire in the woods building a house is not interesting. However, I loved the introduction of Brianna and Roger as characters more central to the story. One of my favorite things about DG's writing is that she is not afraid to force her characters to make difficult choices and have bad things happen to them. It's so refreshing to have such vibrant, heart-breakingly real people to read about. I think this book will prov...more

From a blog post I wrote in 2005:

I got through the 4th book, Drums of Autumn, in Galbadon's Outlander series on Friday night. Another addictive read. This book finds Claire, Jamie and Young Ian establishing a home in North Carolina and getting to know the natives. Another storyline follows Claire and Jamie's daughter Brianna as she travels back in time and her boyfriend, Roger Wakefield, follows her.

There's lots of sex, of course, and lots of Claire complaining she's not getting enoug...more

So far, my favorite book in the Outlander series. Even though the author skips POV's so often it can get confusing, i found the addition of major characters really exciting and well executed.

I loved the story of Brianna and Roger. So complicated. I found Roger to be incredibly endearing, and his struggles throughout the book were very moving.

Wee Ian is one of my favorite characters, and his plight was one of my favorite storylines. I got very choked up when he was forced to join t...more

I don't know why Goodreads can't find this book, it can find all others in the series. Drums of Autumn by Diana Gabaldon #4 in the Outlander series.

Update - I love the books in this series, if you are interested in reading any of them, start with the first, Outlander, and read in order. In comparing this to her other books, maybe it should be a four star, but considering that I left work early yesterday so I could go home and finish it and then stayed up all night reading it, I had to give...more

Well, another mixed bag, but overall enjoyed the 4th book quite a bit. I finally figured out her pattern .. give us a bang at the beginning, kinda drop the ball story-line wise in the middle, then finish up strong so we HAVE to get the next book. With that in mind, I liked the story and setting here much more than in book 3 but felt some of the side stories were a little rushed (like the whole Bree/Lord John/Bonnet business at the end) and kinda said "huh, where did he go/when did he come b...more

I did not care for this book as well as the others. I'm not exactly sure why, but there was just something about it. I think part of it has to do with the absolute melodrama of it. There were so many situations that seemed out of the ordinary that really just irritated me. It was interesting though to hear about places that are close to where I live now. I've actually been to some of the places spoke of in the book, so I found that to be interesting. Overall, its a good read for those interested...more

I really enjoy the focus on Claire and Jamie more than the Roger and Brianna mess. Its unfortunate they had to make an appearance in this book; I found myself skimming the parts about them. However, in the end Gabaldon proves to be a consummate story-teller, wrapping seemingly loose threads together and moving the plot forward, promising more in the next book, The Fiery Cross. Her series is unique in that it not only tells a story of romance, but tells one of marriage and love, of which there ar...more

This was really good! A page-turner. And finally, things come together the way you want them to. I liked this one as much as the first I think- if not more. She didn't drop any characters, there weren't as many story lines, but as usual, fraught with peril! Aside from the fact that whoever read this copy before me obviously had a cat - almost every single page had cat hair on it, making me have allergic reations!!! - I had a smile on my face a lot of the time, laughed outloud more than once, and...more
