Excellent compilation of writings on the Peak from the 16th century to the 21st. Early writers either praise or, in Defoe's case, scoff at the so-called Seven Wonders of the Peak, Ruskin rails at the Monsal Viaduct, and the great E A Baker tells thrilling tales of eluding club-wielding gamekeepers in the days before Access. The book ends with Jim Perrin fairly frothing at the mouth at the thought of off-roaders wrecking ancient trackways: "the 4WD-fantasists who...seem to think they're ploughing ...more
