I don't know why I read these books. I hoped for a serial killer book with interesting characters in addition to gruesome death. That didn't happen here.
I won't recap the plot, because that's done adequately elsewhere, and I'll keep my criticism to what bothered me most. Leaving aside nit-picky observations (of which I have plenty because boy howdy, am I good at picking nits), the characters in this book bothered the snot out of me.

Kill Switch is authored by two heavy hitters in the television industry: Neal Baer, former executive producer and showrunner of NBC’s Law & Order: Special Victims Unit, executive producer of ER (“the longest-running primetime medical drama in American television history”), multi-award winner (Emmy, Golden Globe, People’s Choice, and Edgar), and graduate of Harvard Medical School; and Jonathan Greene, writer and co-ex...more

In 1989, Claire and her best friend Amy were playing outside when a car pulled up, a man got out, and Amy became part of the ‘missing children’ list. Today, Claire is all grown up and in the last stage of receiving her degree in forensic psychology. Working as an intern under the famous Dr. Curtin, who most people see as the “Dr. Oz” of forensic psychology, Claire wants to prove to the man that she knows her job, and wants more than anything to get into the human mind and try to figure out what...more

My Look:
Doctor Claire Waters is part of a fellowship doing forensic psychiatry work on Rikers Island's sickest inmates, but she's already been told that she might not stay with the program. Moreover, they would be right to get rid of her.
She'd messed up with a client, letting her personal failure follow her inside the treatment room.
On that day, with the approaching storm, all Claire could see was herself watching her friend...more

Well, it started out good! Then it flew straight overboard and I gave up.

Claire Waters is a forensic psychiatrist. Todd Quimby is a dysfunctional screw up. Nick Lawler is a good detective going blind. Throw them together and you get a twisty turny mystery that needs to be solved.

This is a three/three and a half star book until about page 200, then it takes off and is a five all the way, in fact it was so good from that point on, I forgot that it started slow and in my opinion a little disjointed. But once I hit around page 200 I could nbot stop reading and did not stop. Likely 100 pages left isn't much to get through but it was amazing, quite a roller coaster. To me, these Law and Order writers did not recreate the show in their writing, in fact other than the fact that...more

When I saw that the writing team for this book are former producers of Law & Order: SVU, I became very interested. While I love the Law and Order series, I am happy to say that this was nothing like a TV episode. I was hoping for something a bit different. Although, I did think it would make for a great movie. Claire is a forensic psychiatrist who has dealt with a major trauma in her past. This is one of the forces that drives her care...more

I chose this book because I enjoy the police procedurals that the authors have worked on in the past. I found this book a little strange. There seemed to be two different stories and at the end they were tied together. It almost seemed like it was written in the 60 minute show format, then they tacked them together.
There were also several times when it read like a screen play with stage direction which wasn't necessary to the story, per se.

Wow! I won an advanced reading copy of this book and was enthralled. I love reading a fast-paced thriller, especially one that leaves me wanting to read late into the night! Kill Switch was that kind of book. Claire is a forensic psychologist who accepts a prestigious fellowship at New York's Rikers Island Correction facility. She is assigned her first patient, a criminal about to be paroled, who brings up some frightening memories from Claire's own past. What follows is a non-stop rollercoaster...more
short review: "Well, that escalated quickly."
Longer version:
I don’t read crime dramas but sometimes a story based about a psychologist and mind games intrigues me enough to pick it up. I won’t lie, I read this book in a day and a half it did have me gripped….just at the end it was a lolz, what!? Type of gripped. It was written by two producers of Law & Order SVU but progressed more like a Lifetime movie. If it is bad, it will happen to our main character, if it is drama, it will happen. (vie...more

I was eagerly looking forward to reading this, but was sorely disappointed. It was so thoroughly contrived and unbelievable that I almost didn't finish it. The writing doesn't flow; perhaps because it was written by two authors. The character of Claire either under reacts or over reacts to various incidents in the book; don't want to say which so as not to give spoilers. Certain events in the book were obviously bound to happen from hints the writer gave us 100's of pages earlier. I know the co-...more
This psychological thriller didn't dissapoint! After seeing that it was written by producers of one of my favorite shows, I decided "there is no way this could be bad". The psychology lover in me loved that the story was based around a forensic psychiatrist and I greatly enjoyed reading her inner thoughts and how she fought to let the science in her mind control the situation. The book kept me guessing and I enjoyed the twists (although not completely surprising) and turns right up until the con...more
Truth be told, I downloaded Kill Switch because it was written by former executive producers of L&O SVU, one of my favorite shows. I didn't know what to expect and was curious. Also, as someone who works with a writing partner, and knowing the specific challenges, I am always interested in co-written projects.

Oh, so disappointed.
The book blurb led me to believe that the main female character was brilliant and driven. Unfortunately, she turns out to be stupid! No common sense, take asinine risks that no one at her level of education and experience would ever do.
The authors turned this sought after PhD scientist/psychiatrist into a bimbo. Stereotypical close minded, tortured cop just off desk duty too.

I read this book because of the authors' connection to Law and Order shows, and I wanted to see if the TV writing would translate to a book. Not so much. It had some great action scenes, but some unbelievable, somewhat contrived plot coincidences and quick wrap-ups. Even though I normally like plots which link a new case and a cold case, this one was disjointed and did not work for me. I liked the character of detective Nick Lawler, but did not like psychiatrist Claire Waters much. I felt her ch...more

This comes from a tried and true television producing/writing duo who worked together for
years on "Law & Order: Special Victims Unit" and are currently doing the same on "A

them into writing a book instead. And it's one HECK of a book. It's about a brilliant
young forensic psychiatrist who begins a prestigious fellowship working with a well
respected doctor dealing with criminal psychopaths. Her first patient...more

Claire Waters has accepted a fellowship working with inmates at Rikers Island. Her first patient, Quimby, reminds her of deed seeded emotions from her childhood. When a blond turns up dead Quimby is the likely suspect. Waters being hard headed and quite frankly too nosy dives head first into the case. Detective Lawler is assigned to the case after returning from one personal tragedy and going through another. Lawler and Water work together to find the serial killer who may turn out not to be Qui...more
Interesting Read. Grisly in a few parts, but not overwhelmingly so. The plot continued to move throughout the book, and wasn't terribly predictable overall, but to a degree in parts. Definitely seems to be written more from the perspective of TV writers, as the characters are simplistic and not fully developed. Last third of the book seemed to drag a bit, bas the story took a twist, and felt as if the authors were trying to meld two lines of thought. Overall, enjoyable.
