This book is worth reading for the fantastic and absurd bicycle race alone: a non-stop 10,000 mile race between a train and a 4-1/2 man bicycle (there's a midget in the trunk to add weight) where the cycling team is fueled by Perpetual Motion Food. Along the way, they discover a mysterious and impossible third contestant.
Marcueil reminds me in some ways of the Count from Angela Carter's "The Infernal Desire Machines of Dr. Hoffman," both for his priapism and his reality-bending wil

I liked Ubu Roi and wanted to see more of Jarry's work. It's short, so that was a relief. And it wasn't that the book was poorly written, rather, that Jarry's understanding of Nietzschean thought is very poor. Mostly it breaks down into ridiculous sexual heroics. Admittedly, I might have liked this more for its camp charm if I read it some other time.

It's been a long while since I read this book-- & it's probably unfair to rely upon a 22 year old memory, but... I remember being quite disappointed with it-- feeling that it didn't compare by any measure with the rest of Jarry's brilliance.

Wow! You had better have a hankering for French exostentialism otherwise you are going to be reading this thinking, "Just what in the hell is wrong with these people?"...

I had trouble understanding this. But the parts I could understand were pretty rad.
