Kate O'Donnell, a feisty young woman seeking a career in photography, leaves Liverpool to make her fortune -- or at least get a photo job -- in London. It's the 190s.

She's got two missions, actually. The other is to trace the whereabouts of her missing brother.

It's quite complicated.

The brother becomes a police target after his lover (male) turns up dead. Kate learns of the crime, which reveals her brother's hidden sexual orientation. She eventually locates the brother, and

In Patricia Hall's Dead Beat, get ready to do the time warp again. Before the Beatles made it big in Liverpool and London in the 1960s, a serial killer had struck the SoHo area with some gruesome deaths. For Kate O'Donnell, a young woman trying to make it as a professional photographer to impress her boss, she was also looking for her brother Thomas who she haven't seen it in years. I would give this 3.5 stars.

I really enjoyed this book. Being from Liverpool myself I found the language and phrasing used by the main character to be on point, particularly for that period of time. I liked the nice steady build up in the story and will look forward to reading more books by this author.

The Beatles subplot is really the least interesting thing about this book, and probably the weakest. That said, the story of a spunky Liverpool girl trying to make it as a photographer in London and the semi-crooked but good-hearted cop she meets there is a pretty damn good one.

I read this one while on holiday, but it was not a holiday book; it was too heavy.
