Lensmire interviews white teachers who work in urban settings with children of color. She presents the complexity and difficulty of their position and avoids simplifying race, positioning the teachers as racist, or setting up a contrast between "good" and "bad" white people. She takes the stance of trying to represent their individual stories and their thinking about themselves as white people in these settings.
