Re-read September 2012: still loving it. It's just such a classic story and so ridiculously romantic and old-fashioned.

August 2008:
I read this I don't know how many times when I was younger, I loved it so much. I'm not sure whether I still would but I wouldn't mind reading it again. The scrapes Ilse gets into and the temper tantrum Ilse has during her time at the posh Mädchenpensionat are quite ridiculous but obviously kept me entertained.

I recently read that this book was first published in the
I was surprised how much I liked this German children's (well, intended for teenage girls, originally) lit classic, written in 1885.

It is about a young girl who grows up all spoilt, and hence wild and rude, and who is sent to a boarding school to be turned into a lady. Of course the idea of the book is to advocate proper, lady-like behaviour to young girls, and, typically for 1885, these would be rather Victorian values, but this didn't turn out as bothersome as I'd expected. On the contrary, I

Oh du meine Güte!!!!! Hilfe!

My grandmother gave this to me when I was a child, probably because she wanted me to adapt like Ilse does (she is that kind of grandmother). Funny thing is, I turned out to be a Trotzkopf (stubborn person) instead. I realize today that this book promotes all the wrong values, but I still love it because CHILDHOOD MEMORIES! I don't remember how many times I've read it, anyhow I can say it hasn't been detrimental to my personal development.
I think I was nine when I first read this, and I remember my mind revolting against the idea of such an institution, it's practices and the change it caused Ilse to undergo. Not that she was much of a likeable character before. At the beginning of the story she is an insufferable spoiled little brat. At the end she is what society expects her to be. She never really gets in touch with who she as an individual is or could be. So much potential wasted, but everything else would probably have been ...more
Bestes Buch überhaupt!! Hat mich in meiner Jugend sehr angesprochen!!

I needed a quick and easy read for vacation and this was free on Kindle so I thought I'd reread a childhood favorite of mine. Still like it very much :) Sure, it is old-fashioned but it is cute and endearing and gives a nice insight into the minds of the German middle class in the late 19th century.
In German Edelschmalz - in English: Cloyingly sweet???? I loved every minute of it and was amazed how much I remembered from reading it 40 some years ago. Summary: Wild stubborn girl gets send to Boarding school, gets sweet and nice - ok that was what the ending was supposed to be :) in real life.
Kindheitserinnerungen: die Geschichte von Ilse zählt zu den klassischen Mädchenlektüren. Auch fürs Fernsehen verfilmt, und schwarz-auf-weiß großartig geeignet, um es unter der Bettdecke zu lesen.
It's one of the classics of German youth literature for girls.

I loved all the series back then; haven't read them in a while, though, so the stars are a tribute to nostalgia.
used to have all the books and read them over and over again passed the book on to my nieces hope they will get as much joy out of them as i did
