I have read and loved many of Anne Lamott's non-fiction books, but Joe Jones is the first I have read of her fiction. What a delight. She is such a wonderful writer, both in voice and in her amazing ability to develop detailed, real characters. You can easily visualize the restaurant in which most of the book takes place, and will find yourself rooting for every one of these likeable, flawed people. There are two older women in the story whose friendship is based on an intuitive kind of comm...more

A pleasure to read because of the beautiful, vivid, complex characters, who offer a lot of wisdom for lost souls like me. Every time I opened it, I felt excited at the idea of spending more time with them - Lou is the Madonna of the Tidepool and Willie is the heartbroken angel. Only four stars instead of five because I felt that one read was enough to glean everything the book had to offer, although I might read it again, if I miss the people.

Though a big fan of Anne Lamott's non-fiction, I am having a hella hard time making it through Joe Jones. It's like yeah, yeah, yeah, this conversations and moments between characters is great and all, but where is this going?

I'm sure many of you are familiar with Anne Lamott's work in Traveling Mercies and others. I live her novels too, mostly written back in the 80s. This one is a fun read as are her series of "Rosie" novels.

I love Anne Lamott but this book is just okay. It has some of the features I enjoy in her books...spirituality, friendship... but that just kept me slogging through.

While the plot wasn't the most exciting, I was really let into the lives of the diner groupies. (I guess that was sortof the point...) A little depressing, but genuine and true.

Adults, fiction fans
Not one of Lamott's best, this was published in 1985. It's slow moving but I love the way the author writes. That said I much prefer "Blue Shoe" and her non-fiction writing.

I liked this book. I need more than 5 stars. It's not as good as some other books that I've given 4 to, but it's still a worthwhile read, and well written book.

I love all of Lamott's novels. This was the first one I read. Her characters are quirky and interesting, and they deeply care for each other.

Interested in more of Lamott's work. This book was a bit too whimsical and predictable for my tastes. Great snapshot of the Bay Area.

"Hanging out in Joe’s Café is an experience not to be missed. Great characters, feeling of place, community, life, death, and comedy."

Eh
What everyone would imagine life in a diner to be like. Endless gossip about the regular customers.
