Alice Hoffman readers/people who like a slow and overly detailed story
I want to like Alice Hoffman books but they're really hard for me to get into. I'd like to think that I just read them at bad times, like when my mind is on something else. But I gave this one a really good try, and I found that it wasn't too bad, once I get past all the things that don't mesh well between me and Hoffman's writing.

I was pretty disappointed in this book, actually. I'd read 7th Heaven and adored it and added Hoffman to my favorite authors' list - prematurely, I guess - based on that novel alone. That's how much a loved it. This novel could have been more moving than it was, as the story had so much room to be more compelling than it ended up being. The writing was also sub-par in comparison to 7th Heaven. I was a little bummed, but won't judge her too harshly (hee) - I will still try the other books of her'...more

Raised this to five stars because after re-reading it, Alice Hoffman is a master storyteller. Because one of the main characters is a teen, I'm going to add this to the teen good reads as well.
Alice Hoffman weaves a dark web of mystery and real-world magic in the small town of Haddan, Massachussetts. With a few beams of sunshine through-out, this novel reads like a modern-day gothic.

I was hesitant to read this book because of all the mixed reviews it was getting, but as a fan of Hoffmans writing I decided to give it a go.
The River King has become one of my favorite novels by Hoffman. It starts out rather slow, but the descriptions are so well written that you feel like you are actually at the school that the story is based around.
The characters are very well done and while slightly overexaggerated, seem very real to me.

I love this book. I am sad it is over. I don't think I've ever had a celebrity crush on a character in a novel before, but that Abel Grey is just so deliciously flawed. I want him. In my pants.
The whole story telling is so skin-tingling mysterious what with the suicides and the ghosts and the fish and the brambles. It's almost soggy when you hold the novel in your hands, swollen with juicy wet story. Mmm. I dig it, this author's style, her voice. Plus, it takes place in a made up t...more

Meh. I usually like Alice Hoffman. (I like that she is prolific enough that I can always fine one of hers at the library!) I ran warm and cold through this one though. Sometimes I got engaged in the plot / characters, sometimes I found myself feeling lonely & depressed by the whole thing (I guess that is a way of being engaged in it too) but often I was rolling my eyes, as in "again with the fish (or the roses or whatever)" ... the magical realism in this one felt almost gratuitous...more

I just finished reading this book and didn't like it that much. I have read quite a few Alice Hoffman books, and this is one of my least favorite. I didn't like the statements that she was making about boarding schools or the parallel made between money and lack of intelligence. I could be reading too much into it, but all the even mildly interesting characters in the book had the same characteristics: they were all smart, poor, and critical of wealth and wealthy people in the same normative ...more

A I love Alice Hoffman. I actually started to read it several years ago but didn't get very far; I can't understand how. It's flat-out fantastic. Hoffman engages the reader with a story about teenagers but it is definitely not a YA book. Floridian Carlin heads up to MA to go to boarding school, lying about the poverty she comes from and her background, and quickly befriends Gus, a noncomformist also at her boarding school. When Carlin falls for the dreamy, popular, good-looking Harry, Gus warns ...more

This book was my first Alice Hoffman book. I didn't fall in love with it, but I knew I wanted to read more by her. Elements of this book fall on to the disturbing side. It's not that I'm unfamiliar with how cruel teenagers can be, I just don't want to curl up and read about it in the middle of the night. What kept me reading this book through to the end in one sitting (a rarity for me) was Hoffman's beautiful descriptions of flowers and her touches of magic. Having read a couple more books by he...more

Haddan, Massachusetts, is home to a private boarding school with strained town-gown relations. A youthful photographer takes a teaching position to be with her ambitious fiancé, an old history teacher realizes she is about to die, a local sheriff investigating the death of an unloved student presses the wrong buttons at the school, and a young woman looking to escape her childhood tries to make her way at the school. All the stories are intertwined, as the characters try to make up for their ...more

I loved this book. I devoured it. Hoffman is one of my favorite authors—I have to read her books while holding a pen so I can underline passages that stir my soul.
excerpt: <i>"What was desire anyway, when examined in the clear light of day? Was it the way a woman searched for her clothes in the morning, or the manner in which a man might watch her sit before the mirror and comb her hair? Was it a pale November dawn, when ice formed on windowpanes and crows called from the bare ...more

I liked this novel very much & recommend it. It’s set in Massachusetts, and has a feel of magic realism. The town of Haddan moves as one, influenced by the river and the weather and the old stories that circulate. One of them involves a beautiful woman who tries to turn white roses into red ones. Another is about a girl who wears a dead boy’s coat, and finds messages from him in its pockets.

there's so much that I wanted to like about this book: the characters, the story, the themes were all so layered and interesting. I originally thought I would like the fluid, almost lyrical writing style, instead I was constantly wondering who's voice was leading me, and who all the varied characters were.
I almost put it down several times (it took me weeks to read, instead of my usual couple/few days) but the potential resolution of the story kept me interested. just not my cup of tea, ...more

I read this book on my recent ski trip because I ran out of books and this one was in the ski house's library. It was a good read and I would say the highlight was the romance between two of the main characters. I found myself skipping ahead pages to try and see what happened to the two lovebirds faster. So either that part of the book was really good, or the rest of the book wasn't that great. Or maybe I'm just a sucker and I should start reading romance novels.

Although the setting of this book at times seemed more murky and brackish than enjoyably mysterious, I do believe that was Hoffman's intent. This book seemed to be quite a bit darker in tone than any of the books I've read by her so far...the description of one hazing in particular left me shuddering and wincing. But again, her masterful ability to meld magical experiences with the every day makes this book shine.

I grabbed this book as a freebie in the laundry room and thought, hmmm...Alice Hoffman...sounds familiar. I'll give it a try.
The first time I tried reading it, I couldn't get past the first couple of pages. The second time, after getting through those initial pages I got sucked in and fell in love with her writing style, the characters, and the story. It's quite magical without being too sentimental.

This kept me reading right up until the end, though I did "solve" the crime ahead of the cop character. The cop and other characters were well-drawn, though the preppies were somewhat one-dimensional. The suspense of the plot was well-maintained, and the back story interestingly different. All this was helped by a sprinkling of magical realism. I'll look for more offerings by Hoffman.

God I hated school, and this book is exactly why. What about children makes them be so mean to other children? I kept wanting to reach through this book and tell them everything would be okay in the end, just survive school. But I couldn't.
Alice Hoffman likes to pull out the depressing, and she pulled it out big in this one. It's still a beautiful story.
