Volume #1 consists of three stories: The Golden Age of the Sith, Ulic Qel-Droma and the Beast Wars of Onderon, and The Saga of Nomi Sunrider set 3000-4000 years before the Battle of Yavin.
The "Golden Age" is an overwrought story that tells of the invasion of the republic by the Sith empire; the dialogue is stiff, the story jumps unevenly from scene to scene, and the plot twists feel too contrived. Ultimately, they're trying to tell too big of a story in too few pages (even ...more

Comprised of four big stories. The first two are more related to each other than the last two; and the last two are more related to each other and the entire second volume than they are to the first two stories.
This is a quick read, probably two to three hours total. A fast read as well because it is difficult to put down. This is the first graphic novel I have ever read and I am amazed how drawn in I was to the stories just like with a good novel or movie.

Kevin Anderson has the honor, dubious earned, of having written the chronologically earliest tales in the Star Wars Universe: The Golden Age of the Sith and the Fall of the Sith Empire. I'd known the plot and characters and even the ship designs I'd see in these stories for years, since reading the Essential Chronology. It was interesting to see them actually pulled off. This is odd because the collection includes not just work by Anderson on the prequel stuff to the originally published Tales of the Jedi, but the work by Tom Veitch as well. Anderson's pieces about Naga Sadow and the background of the Sith people was meant to flesh out Veitch's original work in which the characters are only referenced. The Veitch stuff is much better than Anderson's work, both in imagination and in quality of writing.

When I was growing up, I was absolutely ravenous for any new Star Wars lore. This right here, was pretty much my holy grail. 5000 years before the movies, it dealt with the Old Republic, the Sith Empire, and the war between them. It was absolutely perfect. All the new characters, like Ulic Qel-Droma, and Nomi Sunrider, and all the Jedi history was amazing for me to read.
While I still find it enjoyable, it doesn't hold up perfectly. Like many comics of era, it tends to be rather overwri...more

A good collection of some of the original comics from the early 90's. The first story here focus on the Sith empire, led by Naga Sadow against Empress Teta and some of the Republic, with Jori and Gav Daragon caught in the middle. This adventure covers about 1/2 the book. The next part is an introduction to Ulic, Cay and Freedon Nadd. Also included is the introduction to Nomi Sundrider, who is married to a Jedi and sees him murdered before her eyes. She then begins her own training with a J...more
Great way to learn about the early days of the Republic. Some of the dialogue seemed forced at times, but most of it read smoothly and gave insight into the stories referenced in other Star Wars books and games.
I was probably expecting too much from this book, I only liked one of the stories.
The artwork felt dated and there were some "ugh" parts, but it held my interest throughout.
Typically don't read graphic novels, but seems this is only format of some of the earlier timeline from Star Wars (as opposed to just straight novel). This is great. I could totally see some of this made as a movie. The artwork is fantastic and the story line is compelling. Almost makes you wish he did a movie of this part of the star wars saga instead of those first 3 movies. You learn about the origin of the sith. About half way through and loving it.
Mediocre, but still better than the prequels.
