The Séance is a four-time Edgar award winner written by Joan Lowery Nixon. It takes place in a small town in Eastern Texas, where Lauren, Sara, and a few other girls hold a séance that ends in Sara’s abrupt and mysterious disappearance. Nixon had written more than one hundred-thirty books, but tended to favor writing about mystery and suspense.

Lauren has lived with her great-aunt Melvamay since she was four, after her mother died. Her father never knew about her, and was killed in a More...

Have you ever had a group of friends that experiences a tragedy? In the book The Séance by Joan Lowery Nixon, a group of friends named Sara, Laren, Roberta, Maddie, Allie, and Luemma start a Séance. However, Laren didn't want to do it at first but they all convinced her to join. A Séance is a group of people who send messages to the dead. Again Nixon is reminicent of R. L. Stine, this book was just ok. It was a quick read and was a whodunnit that kept you surprised till the end. My issue was that the characters just weren't very enticing. The main character at first acts like she has no clue what's going on and then it seems knows more than the reader was originally inclined to believe. The main character also frankly got annoying. She repeated the same things, was jealous and just seemed to complain for alot of the book. This ma More...

I zipped through this Tuesday night so I could pass it along to my nieces at the reunion this weekend. I really don't know what they'll think of it. It seemed dated, more so than I would have expected from a novel published in 1980, so to a 21st-century teen, it might seem ludicrously so. The plotting was also fairly weak. The major plot twist was, in my opinion, not set up sufficiently, and the pacing seemed off for such a short novel. But maybe I'm just a little demanding in my old age, so I w More...

I loved this book!! I could not put it down. I kept reading it every night, nonstop. It was one of those books that come by rarely for me.
Besides being easy to read and understand, this book also kept me on the edge of my seat. I think there should be more books like this. The twisted ending was the best part of the book. How could someone so innocent be a killer?! A lot of thought must have went into this book, no wonder why it's so good!
This was definitely a nail biter and defini More...

I picked up this book for my daughter at the library but she wasn't very intested and so I ended up reading it myself. It only took a couple of hours to finish as was just a short novel. A light, enjoyable read, but not very much substance. It built up and kept you interested, trying to solve the mystery in your head, until it suddenly spat out the answer at you and abruptly ended.
And, despite what it leads you to believe-it is NOT a ghost story!

I was surprised this book won the Edgar award. After I finished reading it, the only reason for this I could think of was that was its surprising whodunit. Otherwise I just thought its bland writing and predictable events just don't deserve that much attention. It was about as three-dimensional and as interesting as a chicken scratch. I read this in one sitting, then donated it to my school's charity fundraiser.

I was surprised to see that this won The Edgar Allen Poe award. The writing is a bit antiquated (teenagers don't speak like that anymore), and the plot is slightly predictable. It is a quick read, however, as I read it in a couple sittings. The beginning of the book is strong. I love her first chapter. Her other book, The Kidnapping of Christina Lattimore, is far better if you're looking for a good mystery.

The Seance is probably one of my favorite Joan Lowery Nixon Books-not because its got the cleverst plot, or because its the best written, but because I was drawn into it the most. There's something about imagining yourself isolated in this backwoods setting with its suspicious characters and a self-depricating protagonist thats just...alluring in a "dont look around the corner" horror movie way. I think Lauren, the main character, gives us a unique "outside looking in" view i More...

I think it was actually really good.Jep was the murder at the end and to me it was pretty obvious. I mean , who else would have had access like him? He's a cop and he knows the crimes and how they go. It also was ridicous why he killed her. He obviously didn't like regection. I feel bad though, he did really like her.

I read this because my son asked me too. It didn't really appeal to me at all. I am surprised that its a YA as it seems to be written for a much younger group.
The storyline was a good one and I was surprised by the ending, but the book was just ok.

I love Joan Lowery Nixon's books. The way that the main character described Sara was intriguing, and so was the way that her thoughts didn't let on that she had done something. Another book that almost managed to scare me.
