I bought this book since I live in the south, and I love to garden. I thought it would teach me to cook what I grow.

Inspired by the cover photo, the author sitting on a porch with a bowl of cranberry shell beans in her lap, the porch garlanded with hyacinth beans, I thought there would be recipes for shell beans. I was sorely disappointed not to find any.

Many of the recipes looked good, but not my cup of tea. Many took a while to cook, with plenty of sugar, flour, and fat. The book is peppered

This cookbook was packed with information (which could have been organized in a better way). The author includes nostalgic stories from her childhood as well as stories with other food writers and her own travels. She includes mailing lists of items that she discusses and encourages the reader to check out as well as places to visit (she also provides what she calls "road notes"). Loved this book! Lundy's writing is warm and humorous, and the stories interposed between the recipes are a delight. Highly recommended.

This is one of the best Southern cookbooks available. The fried green tomatoes are slap your mama good.
