Apparently this is the second book in a series based on Detective Inspector Ned Bale, but the first one I've read. In this mystery, the British Minister of Defense is killed in a car bomb, leaving precious few clues. One of them leads to Ned's previous girlfriend Kate who is a dog handler in Afganistan looking for roadside mines. I like the unravelling of the story and the links to current events and political intrigue, but the English idioms and references often left me clueless.

The British Defence Minister is killed by a bomber and the investigation leads the police to A.

I found sections of this book really good / gripping (mainly the action sequences) but whole blocks of this book had ludicrous plot points and clunky writing (hence the 3 star rating).

3.5 I like the Ned Bale/Kate Baker pairing. However the book felt a little as though it was written by two people. Part of it was straight thriller in a masculine style, but part was drippingly romantic - of the did-the-earth-move variety.
