This is McMurtry's fictional take on the Western outlaw Billy the Kid. Seen through the first person narration of a wealthy and civilized pulp novelist who just happened to fall in with Billy The Kid just around the start of the adventures (and killings) that made him famous, Billy is portrayed sympathetically as a troubled but engaging young man who has a tendency to cold-bloodedly murder anyone whom he takes offense to. This is a fine western novel, well-written and enjoyable. Not really comparable to the Lonesome Dove saga, so comparisons don't seem fair. I would have preferred a bit more action and a narrator that was a bit closer to the main action. Billy's death scene was also a bit overwrought and hardly believeable.
This is supposed to be a novel about Billy the Kid, but I'm not familiar enough with the subject to judge the story's historical merit.

I liked the narrator of this book, a rich Philadelphian who fell in love with the West through dime novels and who penned his own. It was a quick read, but when I got to the end, the book seemed to be missing some depth that I had been looking for but never found.

First book that made me cry. I remember the last couple of pages being so sentimental, my 15 year old self couldn't keep it in. Someday I will reread, but I don't really want to spoil my memory of it.

One of the first novels I ever read from cover to cover and I loved this book. The way it was written truly places you in the story.

A fictionalized account of Billy the Kid. Don't expect it to be historically accurate, but it's well written and entertaining.

As always well written by McMurtry, but less evocative than other western he's written.
