Rumble Fish is a novel based on Rusty James, he's a tough kid who loves to fight and get into a lot of trouble. Rusty James is having a good time hanging out at the beach when he meets his old friend Steve Hays. Rusty and Steve begin to talk about hanging out later that night and catching up on the good ol' days. While Steve is talking Rusty has a flashback to when he was 14, and getting into trouble. Rusty gets into trouble with Biff Wilcox and finds himself fighting once again. Everyone is wor...more

I bought this book at the book fair at school when I was in the 7th grade. I started reading it before class and decided that reading the rest of that book took precedence over going to class. As such, I slipped outside, hid in the shrubbery and read this book all day. I was only discovered by one of the school janitors, but she didn't snitch. It was a bummer when I finished the book well before school ended. I was left with nothing to do but wait until school let out and the buses arrived.

I always prefered Rumble Fish to The Outsiders, which I found a little I don't know...homoerotic. This isn't great literature, but it makes you feel grown up when you read it at 12 years old.
I thought the Motorcycle Boy was the shit. Fuck Rusty James.
I remember as a kid, my brother and I read this at the same time and when we finished, my dad was going to rent the movie for us to see. We both could hardly wait to see it. When the day came to rent the movie, we did something to piss our f...more

Rusty-James is one of the toughest kids in his neighborhood. He only has a dad and a brother. His mom left him when he was really young. Rusty-James gets in to so many fights. He gets stabbed, but he gets over it. He wants to be just like his brother, Motorcycle Boy. But he haven't seen his brother in a while. Motorcycle Boy comes back and has changed. Back then he was into all the gang stuff, but he left it now. And Rusty-James has one person that really cares about him, which is Steve. Althoug...more

Most of S.E. Hinton's books are pretty similar, and some of the characters are reprised throughout the various books. Rumblefish isn't The Outsiders, but it is probably a much more stylistically mature novel. Unfortunately, compared to the raw magnetism in her first novel, everything else seems to come up short. I think Hinton's ability to honestly capture teenage angst and violence is unique. Although dated, I think these books should s...more

And the book is its own awesome little animal.
I learned about being simple and complex and educational about fighting fish.
I happened upon this movie and was instantly glued. It's an amazing movie and an amazing chunk of movie history. All the random names: Tom Waits, Dennis Hopper, ugly little buck tooth Sofia Coppola. And on the DVD there was a short interview with the author so I bought the book. Somehow I managed to avoid it when all my friends were reading it in the 8th grade.

I re-read this book not too long ago and it had a heavy impact on me even more so than the first time I read it about a year ago. It was hard to finish the book because Rusty-James' experiences over just a few days changed his life so much and redefined his whole character. I was very compelled and I still think about it randomly during the day. I will definitely go back to this book and read it many times in the future.

Another SE Hinton book I devoured after reading her others. Great teen - maybe even preteen reading in today's world. I can't recall if it is really dated, and whether the stories might clash with my ideas about education or parenting, but if they do, I'm sure it'd provide great fodder for conversations with my kid. I just know I found the fiction very compelling.

I borrowed this book, because the outsiders reminded me about the authour. The way the characters spoke weren't that different compared to the outsiders. For me, Rumble fish wasn't exciting book, because there was lot of fighting and the ending was like "so, then?" The fightings didn't make the book interesting this time.

Rumble Fish is an excellent book about a boy growing up in a tough neighborhood in a rough family. The boy idolizes his older brother and emulates him in any way that he can; he wants to be just like his brother. The problem is that he's not like his brother--he's an individual, but he doesn't realize it.

Rusty-James always says, "When I grow up, I'm gonna be just like my brother the Motorcycle Boy," but nobody believes him. The Motorcycle boy is tough, heroic, and crazy, and he just makes everything okay for Rusty-James. But he won't be around forever.
An amazing, thrilling, wonderful book!

I never read S E Hinton in high school (or middle school) and felt I missed out. Loved the outsiders but felt Rumble Fish was lacking something. It felt incomplete. I should have approached it as a short story and maybe i wouldnt be so let down

I had to read this book for school, so of course I thought it would be another boring book. Actually, I was surprised to realize I enjoyed it. I actually finished it before everyone in my class... I couldn't put it down.

Rumble Fish was perhaps the darkest of the Hinton books I read as a youth. The characters were harder to get to know, and therefore I wasn't as invested in them as some of her other works. Still a good book, though.

I recently tried to watch the movie version of this book. It was dreadful. Abysmal. Horrid. I watch about half an hour of it and then I turned it off. It was that bad.
The book I think was ok. Not great.

This book is about a boy that wants to stay at the top of the gang. He is desparate to be just like his older brother called Motorcycle Boy. When things get out of hand he has to find a way to stay at the top.

I just started with book, I'm not far in this book but I picked this book because I thought it would be interesting and I like books that have drama, only because it has something to look forward to reading.

Kids fight over turf and who will be in charge of their gang, and over chicks, all in an effort to emulate the bigger kids. This was sooooooooooo cool when I was a kid. The ending usually makes me cry.
