The 35 paintings that have come down to us from the hand of Jan Vermeer (1632-1675) place him beside Rembrandt and Frans Hals as one of the great masters of the golden age of Dutch art. Most of his pictures, all of which are reproduced in this text, show women about their daily business. Vermeer records the tasks and duties of women, the imperatives of virtue under which t ...more

Neste livro passa-se em revista as obras de Vermeer de uma forma simples e acessivel.É um bom livro para quem gosta de ficar a saber um pouco sobre o pintor e os seus quadros sem ser de uma maneira exaustiva.

The art was amazing - but I was annoyed by the writing. I think I always bristle at someone telling me exactly what the artist was intending when they painted this or that, and what I should be noticing when I look at something.

More than a mere picture-book, this concise portrait of the career of Jan Vermeer van Delft packs into 90+ pages a hefty dose of critical and cultural analysis in regard to the few master works this Dutch master left behind. Since very little is known about the life of Vermeer, this book reflects that deficit of knowledge by putting the emphasis of the text on his paintings within the cultural context of the age in which he lived. I would very much recommend this book to the curious artist looki ...more

The chapter topics/divisions & other organizational scheme for the content in this thin introductory volume are not intuitive and do not seem particularly useful, to me; some idiosyncratic interpretations of paintings & –- in particular, a certain _idee fixee_ of the author’s -– diminish the book’s trustworthiness as a guide to understanding Vermeer's work.

In addition, although it claims to be a second edition, of 2007, much obviously outdated information has not been corrected since

One of the best portfolios representing Vermeer's deal.
The thirty-something attributed works are spread few and far between - or stolen, as in the case of Boston's Gardner theft. New York, surprisingly, has the most paintings housed under one roof - five at the Met, as well as in one city - The Frick owns 4. (The Hague, surprisingly, only possesses three.) If you've got some time, go have a couple pints prior to paying a buck to get into the Met. Go peep the five paintings. One the best dollars

The illustrations were just beautiful! How could they not be...Vermeer.The accompanying text was somewhat interesting but not compelling enough when you consider the subject.I like the art critic
to be as enthused (and a little awestruck) as I am by the art.

Beautiful compilation of this amazing artist's work - although the book is comprehensive, it could have larger images of more of his paintings. Otherwise it's near perfect.

Can't beat the price!
Dali thought VerMeer was one of the 2 Greatest Oil Painters of all times! (The other being Velasquez!)

Study the paintings, then go see Girl With a Pearl Earring... the lighting of that movie is uncanny.

Tim and I looked at this art when we were waiting in the airport for Jill's wedding. I just love his style!
