The book the last apprentice is one great book. It has many twists and turns. The main characters are Tom, Alice, The Spook, and Morgan. The plot is that Tom has to find a way to save his father's spirit without giving Morgan the power he wants. The setting is an old village. Will Tom be able to save his father and most important the world or will Morgan be the last person alive.

Tom and the Spook practiclly have the same charateristics. They both will do anything to save the village. Morg...more

If you liked the first two books in the Last Apprentice series, you will like this one too. In this installment, Tom and his master Mr. Gregory, who is a Spook, go to his winter home in cold Anglezarke Moor. There the Spook keeps several evil creatures trapped in pits, including two lamia witches.
But Tom is more concerned about his dying father, and the threat to him presented by a former apprentice Spook, Morgan, who threatens to use his power over dead souls to force Tom to help him raise ...more

Wow...and the third times the charm. Excellent read. Not recommended for under 13...but the story is progressing and getting darker. Joseph Delaney is a master at conveying the maturing of a young man apprenticed to an occupation that would terrify most. Beautifully done. I can't wait to finish it and read the next one when it comes out!

Edit:

Have now finished the book. Beautiful...simply beautiful. Joseph Delaney honestly makes you wonder for the character who can be trusted...and...more

Night of the Soul Stealer was really exciting to read, I could hardly put it down. The tone was a bit dark - appropriate considering what Tom has to face - and there were several surprises throughout that I didn't see coming. Tom is a very realistic protagonist, because he's not perfect - there are times when he's afraid and makes mistakes, but he still manages to pull through and be strong. It was great to learn more about Mr. Gregory's past, as well as his connection with the book's antagonist...more

On the back cover of the books it says "Warning: Not to be read after dark." If you're wise you will heed this warning.

This is an excellent book that was full of lots of creepy stuff. As an adult I found it dark and creepy, full of some disturbing images, so I can only imagine how I would have reacted to it if I had read it as a kid. (It is sold as a children's book.) I would have had nightmares.

Now, I can't wait for book 4!

this is an interesting series---the storytelling is great. good plot, like the character development, nice pace, etc. but i didn't give it a higher rating because i do find the subject matter to be a bit too dark for my taste. most of the time the beings that tom and his master have to fight just gross me out/creep me out too much. not over the edge, but definitely teetering right on it.

Just as good as the two before. This book has so much action, during the middle of the book, I thought it was the climax, but later on the climax came. As exciting and thrilling as the middle was, the end was even more! The end was also sad, so sad that I did almost cry, I felt sooooo bad. Also the ever going mystery of Alice continues, she is still probably my favorite character.

Spooky! Some of the scenes were too dark for younger readers. The book would likely give them nightmares. This books continues the story of Tom Ward, an apprentice to "the Spook" who protects the County from boggarts, witches, ghosts and the like. In this story, they fight a fallen apprentice who speaks with and controls spirits of the dead.

I was not nearly impressed by this book as I was by the first two in the series. It seemed like the author was building to some huge climax throughout the entire book, and then nothing ever happened. Also, this one was far more predictable than the other two, and the language was very simple. I was definitely disappointed.

This one was again close to the border for evil. I stopped here, because I was reading about the next book and come to find out they are fighting the devil. I felt he crossed the line to evil there, and I have decided not to continue reading these books.

I enjoyed this book. I was planning to read through the series when the author was planning a five book series. Now he has no end point in mind. I decided to quit with the series. It is good but, I dislike reading series with no end.

I love these books, they are just the right amount of spooky/scary for me. I have been giving the first of the series to my teens who have wanted a good Halloween read that wasn't super scary or horrific.

This book was fun, although not the best of the series. The first two (Curse of the Bane and Revenge of the Witch) are a fun ride. The mythos in this series is original and clever.

Another scary adventure for Spook apprentice Tom Ward. There was lots of interesting stuff about some of the character's past lives.

Good series (can't tell if this is book one or somewhere in the middle), mixing fantasy and horror. I'd be willing to read more.
