In this 5th book of the Sweep Series, the heroine, Morgan, learns that life is a complex mixture of good and evil. So are people. The plot revolves around the emergence of a new and sinister stirring of evil magic in the little town Morgan lives in. When handsome and alluring Hunter points to Morgan's friend David as the source of the dark magic, our heroine steps in to try and prove David's innocence.

The subplot details Morgan's grief over the betrayal of her first love - Cal. I found Tiernan'...more

I never realized it - but the author draws me in with her writing with the follow up of each book. You can see the progress of her writing. And since the first two books are all about introductions and getting to know the character, it gets easier to skip all that and just get basic details. It saves room for more action and new emotional levels. And it makes reading all the more enjoyable.

I love the idea that Morgan and Hunter hate each other at first; it makes it clear that he and Cal are tot...more

Hunter geht den dunkle...more

If Morgan didn't think she was traumatized enough as it was, she's even more upset with having to deal with the reality of the previous book's events. The boy she loved tried to kill her in order to save her from his mother's evil intentions. Her biological mother had an affair with someone that was decidedly not her mate Angus. Add onto this some blossoming feelings for the mysterious Hunter & it's no wonder that Morgan is feeling very overwhelmed.

This book serves as a great bridge between...more

The first 2-3 books in this series are addictive, a fresh "modern-teen" POV in the tired genre of witches/kids with supernatural powers finding themselves (and the wonder of Wicca) among families/communities who "don't get it".

After #3, it goes downhill. There is no psychological development of the main characters (and the secondary characters are quite shallowly described and hard to distinguish throughout the series; even the more promising and believable ones, BFFs Bree & Robbie are essen...more

Today's review is on Awakening by Cate Tiernan

Awakening is the 5th book in the Sweep series, and as the last I found I really enjoyed it. Perhaps I am getting soft in my old age, but I did find myself smiling some and crying just a bit too.

Cal and Selene have fled town leaving Morgan with not only a hole in her heart, but a hole in her life. She tells her family simply that she and Cal had gotten into a fight and that she broke up with him. She then realizes that the birthday gifts that Cal had...more

I like the series for it's constant mystery and tension, though I feel like the characters, Morgan in particular, could have had some development. Morgan is deeply conceited, thinking about the looks and looks and looks. And the way the book goes, it seems like it is ok to think that good looks will get you far. The amount of times she mentioned Rabbi's pimples and how she is the reason for his magickal recovery and how NOW he has a chance with Bree is more than needed in the book. However, agai...more

The coven leader for Cirrus is gone, and everything seems to have been torn apart for poor Morgon who was literally just starting to learn who she was. The emotions are tragic and yet cliche of that which belong to a heartbroken teenage girl. But in many respects this is a good thing because of how it is shown, giving it this much deeper feel of reality. However there still seems to be some mystery behind Hunter and Sky. What I didn't expect was for there to be some mystery behind David from pra...more

These books move so quickly. Pretty good so far. In comparison to some other similar-ish teen series (The Immortals come to mind), this series gives our main girl some brains. So often, the main character makes mistakes. Which is great, which is what growing up is all about. However, often they are BAD mistakes, with disastrous consequences and often, she makes the same types of mistakes and assumptions repeatedly. Here, Morgan has suspicions where any logical girl might, and she acts on them, a...more

After the first book I thought to myself, "Well that wasn't AMAZING, but it was good. There's a lot of potential". Then after the second book I was thinking my first thought might have been wrong. Luckily I didn't stop reading them, because the 4th and 5th books in this series were fantastic. Once things get going, there's more room for character development, especially in those characters that really matter. Unlike with Cal, Hunter's character is well rounded, and there's more development as th...more

I absolutely adore these books. The plot line in them is so interesting and unique that you cannot help but to devour them. I've never read another series like the Sweep series. Awakening just made me love it even more. Following Morgan through her tantalizing love life is just driving me crazy. There is no way to predict the plot twists Tiernan puts into her stories. And the fact that the entire thing is based upon the Wicca religion is brilliant. I love learning about it with Morgan as she goe...more

I think it's great that Morgan was saved by Bree and Robbie. The two most important people in her life before Wicca. (And besides her family) and even though I hated Bree for her bitchy actions I wished she and Morgan would be best friends. Friends are very important. I know that too and I feel it also that way.

I also feel this link with Morgan right now. Sometimes she reminds me of me. The way she thinks of herself and the way she thought of Bree as her best friend (not the bitchy moment). How...more

Video of me ranting about this book? It can be found HERE. Full, written review is further down below...

This is going to be a pretty damn short review, because I didn't have that much material to gripe/gush about with this book. I felt that it was more filler but still gave us more information regarding the over series plotline. This is a direct continuation from Dark Magick and after being betrayed by Cal, Morgan has to come to grips with the reality of the situation of exactly who she is and...more

Suddenly I was crying, unable to hold it back anymore. "I hate this," I sobbed. "I hate it if having magick means I have to be part of this. I never asked for this. I'm tired and I hurt and I won't want to hurt anymore."

That's the premise for all of Morgan's torturing throughout this book. You go on such a roller coaster ride of emotions with her that you literally feel them all, as she's displaying them. Her first love, the love she thought was her soul mate, and his mother Selene along with t...more

Morgan Rowlands has discovered magick, love and power but with it has found secrets, betrayal and death. Her world has changed since Cal's betrayal and Morgan is trying to adjust to the shock. When someone begins to work dark magick in Widow's Vale, Morgan wonders if Cal and Selene have returned for her. But she is about to learn that there are varying degrees of black and white, and not all are clear to see.

This is the fifth book in the awesome Wicca/Sweep series (after Book of Shadows, The Cov...more

In a review thst I previously read, they said that this book was slow compared to the previous books. I don't completely agree with that person's opinion. Some parts were a little slow but I think that is true for any book. In Awakening, you get to know Sky Eventide and Hunter Niall a liitle better. Morgan's powers don't develop more like they did in the previous books but she does seem to be stronger as a person. I like how Cate Tiernan keeps the character development continuously going through...more

This series has a way of lingering after I put down each book, making me feel as though I'm living in it's world rather than my own, and that's a pleasant effect. I love this series. As you read each book, you grow more with the character. I can relate with the estrangement Morgan encounters when losing someone close to you, and the feelings are well interpreted in these books. Cate Tiernan is truly gifted. If your a fan of Lisa Jane Smith books you'll love this series!

Morgan has escaped an attempt on her life, but now she is confused about who to trust. And there is definitely some evil still happening around town. Is someone still after her or is it something else all together?

I can't help loving these little books. The magic is fun but there are some serious messages here too. Tiernan gets the messages across without beating them over your head. I think this is a great series for teens, I can't wait to see what happens next.

Jump up and down! This book was great! EEk! Hunter and Morgan kiss!!! It's perfect. When I was making sure when I order the book from my library that they were in order so I used Wikipedia and now I know that Hunter and Morgan have a kid...when I accedentily read that I screamed and started punching the wall!! It sucks! But I have to remember that I don't know what happens to Cal or Sky, Hunter Morgan or even Bree! Can't wait to read Spellbound!

Read this in 3 hours at the bookstore yesterday. Fun. That was all i did. Read. Thats what most of what ive been doing for the past month has been. Im really only reading this for the story because sometimes it strikes me how rediculous all of this is... i know its not meant to be realistic but still books like this put such a different image out there for pagans. but like all bad movies that were once books i move past taht.

Awakening by cate tiernan is one of the most misterioud books i ever read. When Morgan finds out her boyfriend trys to kill her because she is a witch with many strong powers. Now Morgans has to find a way to get rid of all the gifts Cal her boyfriend gave her. When Morgan finds herslf surronded by frieds that she is not sure to trust or not. If you want to know more you'll have to read it!

This is my favourite by far. It seems that Tiernan is finally writing to her full potential in this book. The magic described (which can be very difficult as describing bolts of lightning and all those things are easily written fakely) was rather exciting, and the side characters are actually developing some deeper character themselves. Interesting. Looking forward to the next one.

Awakening is full of magic, betrayal, passion, and strength. When life is thrown into to turmoil for Morgan Rowlands, she has to find a way to cope with all that's happening- good and bad. Relationships are tested and friendships are on the mend. Another great novel of the sweeps series.

"was born in New Orleans, LA, in 1961. New Orleans is one of the most interesting American cities, and it has an incredibly rich and exotic culture that had a profound influence on me. Kids in other cities have lemonade stands; we sold voodoo gris-gris and made wax dolls in the likenesses of our enemies. It's a very beautiful city, and the constant heat and humidity make gardens grow out of contro...more
