This book was a very quick read--I finished it in a matter of hours. It certainly had a very interesting plot (I can't say I have ever found work of fiction about a schizophrenic sociopath "trapped" in Jesus' body), and I enjoyed it while reading it. I found myself caring for the characters, and got caught up in the twists and turns. The ending left something to be desired, and there were several avenues that were alluded to but never explored, including information from the past ab...more

Okay, so technically I haven't finished this book, though I'm pretty confident I never will. Another road trip listen, this book was entertaining enough for a few hours, but after the introduction of fake Jesus #2, I was finding it hard to maintain a level of interest that would inspire me to keep listening. Not that it's not good or silly, just that maybe it's too much silly for me. Those of you who love ridiculousness would probably do better than I.. Until I get less serious, though, I think ...more

This book was a quick read - large print, large margins, and largely lacking. I felt like it would have worked better as a short story... there wasn't enough substance for a novel. I didn't buy the characters or the plot. I also felt like it was trying too hard to be quirky. I'm a big fan of quirky, but something about this book bugged me. Maybe. It. Was. All. The. One. Word. Sentences. I feel like I should have enjoyed this book more than I did. Maybe I was just in the wrong kind of mood for it...more

Another good, light novel to read in a day. I picked this one up when I was near the end of Henry and Clara and things were getting ominous. This was set in a small Florida town and is peopled with a lot of quirky characters. Not overly quirky, so they are annoying, but just unique. Jesus comes to town at Christmas time in a fancy RV. His method of bringing salvation is a bit suspect and the people in the town deal with Jesus and their own problems.

Whale Season is a kalidescope of heart-warming craziness. A kind-hearted serial killer offers his new buddy the Hallmark card of death, honey bees swarm a comotose used RV salesman, a boy bonds with a hat wearing aligator and so, so much more. Nicole Kelby writes southern-fried Monty Python.

People have compared this to Carl Hiaasen's books, but apart from the characters being odd and in Florida, I don't think it's true. Kelby's writing style is very different, and she creates characters that are a little less clear-cut - the good guy isn't always the good guy, and damnit if the bad guy isn't Jesus.
Quirky, touching, and enjoyable.

This original and charming novel evokes the wackier side of Florida described by the author's mentor Carl Hiaasen, but with a somewhat gentler and more mystical outlook, and I say this even though poker, mayhem, and serial killing play important roles in the plot. Definitely an enjoyable read with memorable characters and settings.

I. Liked. The. One. Word. Sentences! This really is "a really good story" like the cover says. It is mythical, without being too mystical. The swamp setting is perfect for this tale, giving it a nether-world context for the various gods to inhabit. Oh, and the recipes in the back are mouth-watering.

This book made me laugh out loud, but also gasp and tremble as I tried to guess the fate of the residents of Whale Harbor. Kelby has a great sense of humanity and her writing is beautiful, honest, funny and wonderful. I can't wait to read more of her work.

This was a book that I picked up because of the picture on the spine!
There is a picture of someone who resembles Jesus. He is winking and underneath it says "a really good story" I couldn't resist!
And I proceeded to enjoy it very much.

This book still makes me laugh. I love the fact that on the cover it shows a picture of Jesus with the thumbs up recommending this book. This mystery has humor, romance, intrigue, murder, mystery and a kick butt surprise ending

Loved this. It's the mark of good screwball comedy to me, even with all the darker elements: The situations may be wildly implausible, but the characters' reactions to their circumstances ring true.

This was a good funny read. Written along the lines of a Tom Robbins novel. A good rainy day, flight or beach book. Something that can be finished in day or so.

Loved the humour. Reminded me some of Christopher Moore. Surprised how well she tied it all together. Now, we must wait for the movie!

Kinda risque in a few places, but definitely worth the read for the Bee-Jesus (you'll see). A fun, quirky, quick read.

The offbeat nature of this compelled that fourth star for me..... A good read. Not moving, not memorable, but engaging.
