Bobby dan temannya, Lady Frances (Fran...more

Agatha Christie is one of my favorite authors of all time. So you can expect me to be a bit partial to her writing. I love her and the way she weaves magic in every book of hers. Her books are simply marvelous and so is this book ‘Why didn’t they ask Evans’. The protragonists Bobby and Frankie are awesome especially Frankie. She is independent, smart and spunky. She is now right on top with my favorite female fictional characters.

The plot like any Agatha Christie book is brilliant and grasping....more

Agatha Christie truly is the Queen of Mystery. Why Didn't They Ask Evans? was a reminder of that. The story flowed beautifully, the mystery slowly unraveling.

The protagonists Bobby and Frankie were lovable young adventurers, Frankie especially clearly bored with her life and looking for exciting (if dangerous) escapades. Their humor was subtle but clearly visible, which made the read easy and fun. Even the supporting characters were brilliant, or maybe I've just read one too many books with awfu...more

I think I expected more from this than the bored socialite looking for adventure. I enjoyed it like I do when watching Monk knowing that I don't have to take the murders too seriously, but it is not usually my favorite type of Agatha Christie. I knew or at least strongly suspected both the murderers pretty early on by the way they reacted to the information revealed by Frankie and Bobby. I didn't trust or like Moira from the moment she appeared just too sobby and "trusting" for someone who is af...more

If Bobby had a better golf swing, he never would have found the man at the bottom of the cliff, and the tide would have taken care of the body! Whose likeness did Bobby find in the dying man's front pocket? But most suspiciously, why were his last words, WHY DIDN'T THEY ASK EVANS?

Agatha Christie must have had great fun imagining this romp through the English countryside from Wales to London and Devon, by motorcycle, car and airplane with Bobby Jones, son of the local Vicar, and Lady Frances (Fra...more

Book three in Agatha Christie: Five Complete Murder Mysteries. Another book I hadn't read before with a spunky female and her childhood friend as detective. Like The Secret Adversary - but with different(ish) characters. This one was quite surprising at the end and I really didn't see it coming. Not that I spend a long time trying to figure out the mysteries myself. I'm usually so engaged in the books that I read right to the end without evening stopping to think. I think I can see why they chan...more

To put it mildly--not one of Christie's best--and I am a fan who has rated books of hers five stars. I really liked it at first. Bobby Jones is a amiable young man, a vicar's son, who finds a dying man at the foot of a cliff. The man's last cryptic words were, "Why didn't they ask Evans?" Soon there's an attempt on Bobby's life and he and his childhood friend, Frankie, aka Lady Frances Derwent, are on the case. There's a great chemistry between them, wit and humor to be had in the tale, a breezy...more

How I read it: I own the book.

What attracted me to the book: It's an Agatha Christie and I've read all her books. Doesn't the title just make you want to find out what it means?
Who should read this book: Everyone!

Summary (from amazon): Was it a misstep that sent the handsome stranger plummeting to his death from a cliff? Or something more sinister? Fun-loving adventurers Bobby Jones and Francis Derwit's suspicions are certainly aroused-especially since the man's dyi...more

While Agatha Christie is best-known for her sleuths like Hercule Poirot and Miss Marple, I’ve discovered that some hidden gems among her “standalone” novels. Why Didn’t They Ask Evans? Is a thoroughly enjoyable read, anchored by the terrific chemistry between the protagonists, lifelong friends Bobby Jones, son of the local vicar, and Lady Frances Derwent. Their relationship, particularly the way they constantly spar and view their case, reminds me of another pair of Christie sleuths – Tommy and...more

Although not one of her greatest "young adventurous couples," vicar's son Bobby and Lady "Frankie" Derwent have an unsual depth and spark to overcome their lack in detective skills (as well as their incredible luck). These are always fun breezy novels but I thought this plot was a bit thinner and more unlikely than most. Partners in Crime fans will like this one as I was reminded of Tommy and Tuppence several times throughout.

While playing a game of golf, Bobby discovers a body at the bottom of...more

This was my first Agatha Christie book and I don't think it will be my last (mainly because I borrowed three Christie's from my friend).

Having always had a mental image of Christie novels as somewhat soft and cozy, I was pleasantly surprised to find that 'WDTAE' bristled with acerbic wit and had a tightly woven plot. Being written in the 30s, it very much felt like a product of its time in terms of dialogue, but that only made it more enjoyable for me. Their way of speaking is just too adorable....more

This is quite possibly the last Agatha Christie book that I had not read. She wrote about eighty, and I've read about 79, so you can imagine my excitement. I bought it, hoping that it one of the unknown, but I don't have a list or anything, so I was pleasantly shocked to find that Why Didn't They Ask Evans? was totally new to me. So exciting! This Christie is a one-off – no Poirot or Marple (not even Tommy and Tuppence), and concerns Bobby Jones and Lady Frances Derwent’s attempts to solve the s...more

I'm continuing my "tour de Agatha," albeit very slowly. Whenever I read one of her stories, I am reminded of why I fell in love with her writing so, so, so many years ago. She remains one of my favorite authors and I love how she tells a tale.

This story seems so familiar to me, but I'm not sure if I've read it before or not. I enjoyed reading about the different characters, a notable departure from her Hercule Poirot and Miss Marple books. The plot twist at the end seems like something I've rea...more

The thrilling (yet romantic) adventure of the duo amateur sleuths, Bobby and Frankie, to unveil the mystery of a dead man in Marchbolt begins with Bobby, playing golf on a misty day, heard a short cry from down a cliff. Upon arriving to where he suspected the cry came from, he saw a dying figure lying at the bottom of the cliff. While waiting
for his golf-playing companion who went to look for help to come back, Bobby was left accompanying the dying stranger. Before going off to the next world, t...more

Agatha Christie is the Queen of Crime for a reason: None of her books are "horrible" or "lost my attention". No, her works always entertain and keep one guessing at the outcome. This is one is no different and is a great addition to my collection.

Was also published under the title "The Boomerang Clue".

Bobby Jones is out golfing with a family friend when he stumbles upon the body of a man who has fallen (or was he pushed?) off a cliff. This man has a photograph of a beautiful woman in his pocket...more

Another fun mystery read from Agatha Christie, with plenty of fast-paced suspense to keep the reader turning the pages. As a pair of witty, amatuer sleuths, Francis and Bobby bring to mind Christie's Tommy and Tuppence from other books.

The book's premise--that of a murdered man who utters a mysterious question in his last breath--is a clever one, and is only the beginning of a series of suspenseful twists and turns. The hero and heroine may seem a little naive in places, but their likability he...more

Why Didn't They Ask Evans? was my first Agatha Christie novel. This book was so thrilling and suspenseful. One of the main characters, Bobby Jones, while playing golf with a Dr. Thomas, discovers a man that has fallen over a cliff below one of the holes. Dr. Thomas, after discovering the man will soon be dead, runs to get help and the police. Bobby stays to watch over the man. While watching him the man suddenly opens his eyes and mutters "Why didn't they ask Evans?" he then falls into the chain...more

The romance between Bobby and Frankie was hilarious.
However, the plot of the story was too twisted with too many characters to digest together.
The mystery of the handsome man plunged to death during misty fogs surrounded the golf link was acceptable. But when other additional characters came into pictures, like Mr & Mrs Caymen, Henry, Sylvia, Roger, Nicholson & Moira, I didn't feel satisfy for each character progression.

I think Agatha made this story too seriously to be fun.
In the end,...more

I wouldn't give a decently written book one star (and anyway stars are arbitrary blah blah blah) but if any deserved it, this did. It's Hardy Boys for adults. It's childish and predictable and dull. I never try to solve the mystery (surprises are awesome) but it was so obvious I hardly needed to finish the book. Except to learn that getting away with it is acceptable, sometimes.

Also, coffee plantations in Kenya: hoo boy, lady. Though of course finding that Great Job for an Englishman a very unco...more

Why Didn't They Ask Evans was a fun Agatha Christie mystery. I've been listening to a lot of Hercule Poirot mysteries, and I enjoyed the change of perspective on this one. Frankie and Bobby were a fun duo to read about. The mystery was well-written and I liked the clever twist on who was actually the murderer. Agatha Christie always manages to throw a curve, just when I think I have figured out who the real villain is. This book was fast-paced, mysterious, and lots of fun, although I was a littl...more

This was another one of Christie's novels where I'd seen a tv adaptation of it several times before I read the original. In this case, it's led to utter confusion on my part. The plot is fairly fast-moving and the characters are a lot more engaging and sympathetic than in the adaptation, but the sheer convoluted nature of the plot left me struggling to understand what had just happened. Part of the confusion stems from the constant name-changing and hidden identities of the villains of the piece...more

Não...more

The plot may not be the most polished that Christie's ever produced, and feels a little awkward in places. It does have a classic Christie hook; the innocuous last words of a dying man 'Why didn't they ask Evans?' lead an innocent Vicar's son named Bobby into the adventure.

What this book does have is solid character work. I adore the unpretentious and clever Frankie as a character and her friendship with the sweet but clueless Bobby unfolds nicely. This book didn't make me go 'wow' so much as '...more

Photographers, thought Bobby disgustedly, were the worst kind of liars. P24

“I know what you mean,” said Bobby. “There is something rather uncanny about it. I should call it a play rather than a book. It’s as thought we’d walked on to the stage in the middle of the second act and we haven’t really got parts in the play at all, but we have to pretend, and what makes it so frightfully hard is that we haven’t the faintest idea what the first act was about.” P159

Agatha Christie also wrote romance novels under the pseudonym Mary Westmacott, and was occasionally published under the name Agatha Christie Mallowan.

Agatha Mary Clarissa Miller was born in Torquay, Devon, England, U.K., as the youngest of three. The Millers had two other children: Margaret Frary Miller (1879–1950), called Madge, who was eleven years Agatha's senior, and Louis Montant Miller (1880...more
