A simple, small, no-nonsense story! A man driving in the night through the fog finds himself entrenched in a ditch. So he walks up to the nearest house and walks into a murder scene quite unexpectedly! He finds a cripple of a husband murdered, shot through his head, in the wheel-chair, while the wife is standing in a corner with the gun still in her hand and confessing to the murder. But did she really do that? Is she shielding someone else? Maybe a lover? Or her retarded bro-in-law?

Its a dark rainy night. Perfect time for a murder.

This book is about an ultimate revenge. A man in a wheel chair turns up murdered. Some would say the neglected and emotionally abused wife is the killer. Others think its the wives lover. The more the book goes on, it starts looking like the mentally handicapped brother has killed his own brother.

Then the police start to pry and find out this dead man is a murderer himself. So who did it, a stranger? the wife? the lover? the b More...

The Unexpected Guest was a play writen by Dame Agatha Christie and novelised by Charles Osborne. Anyone who love a good mystery should read the book. It is unexpected to the end. The Unexpected Guest could best be described as a murder non-mystery as it begins when a stranger, the "unexpected guest" runs his car into a ditch in dense fog in South Wales, makes his way to a house where he finds a woman standing with a gun in her hand over the dead body of her husband.

Kat's review of Madame Bovary reminded me of this story. The wife is discovered standing over her husband's body and holding a smoking gun. Then she confesses to killing him.

Well, given that it's an Agatha Christie, you'll have guessed it still isn't completely straightforward. To start with, it soon transpires that the bullet doesn't match the gun...

I don't know if it was the way it was translated (I read the Spanish version) or the lack of Poirot or Mrs. Marple, but I didn't enjoyed this one as much I thought I was going to. Sure, Agatha Christie manages to pull you into the story with a plot full of mystery and packed with well crafted characters, but I actually guessed the outcome of this story, which is odd when I'm reading any of Christie's work, usually I never know what to expect. I was also a bit confused through most More...

Charles Osborne adapted this Christie play into a book. It's interesting trying to figure out who the murderer is, but I think it must have worked better on stage. A car goes into a ditch, the driver shows up at a country house looking for help, and finds a young wife has apparently killed her wheelchair ridden husband. (No, it's not Lady Chatterley getting revenge - alas!)

This was originally a play that Christie wrote and later adapted to book form by Charles Osborne. I didn't think it read like a Christie and that almost bothered me. It did keep me guessing until the end, I had narrowed it down to two suspects by the middle of the book. Fortunatly one of them did do it. Main plot is a motorist stuck in a ditch on a foggy night goes to a house for help and walks in on a dead man and a wife holding a gun. She is not the murderer, so who is?

It had a great, twisting and unexpected plot and was another of Agatha Christie's winners. But the way it was written was bland and kind of fake. It didn't describe anything very well and even though is was a realistic murder the characters and their actions were very unnatural and very unbelievable.

This scenario might work well as a play (the reason why I gave it two stars), but definitely not as a book. There is little to no introduction, the characters behave randomly, there's no time for events to sink in, and the ratio of plot twists to page count is way too high. Don't read it unless you're really curious.

The British Inspector messed up this one because the guest really did do it. I just hadn't read an Agatha Christie one for a long time and this was a short one and fairly typical with several characters and lots of clues.

I would've given this twisting novel a 5 star except that it wasn't very descriptive. The characters and their reactions were really unrealistic which made it hard for me to read.

I don't know why they turned a perfectly good play into a novel. I feel like it wasn't worth it. I still like the story though.

This is a "novelization" of one of Agatha Christie's plays, written after her death. A nice little mystery - I didn't guess who did it until the end.
