This was my second Agatha Christie book and my first ever Miss Marple book. I would say that I was very surprised how little Miss Marple is actually in the book...maybe that's nieve of me, but I really hadn't kept track of Miss Marple stories so I don't know, either, if they are all like this or just this one.
It was great fun to read and I really appreciate the fact that the story was told from the view point of the Vicar. What a great look at English Countryside Culture! I wonder if it's r...more

This is the first Miss Marple mystery. It's a lovely introduction to a sweet elderly spinster lady who has a knack for human nature. You can't help but believe what she says is the truth. She just knows.
I'm glad to say that even though I didn't have the murderer figured out by the time I finished reading the book, I was at least on the right track since I did manage to have half of it figured out before she summed up what really happened to the poor Inspector. I would like to think that if I...more

There are many Peculiar Things happening in the English village of St. Mary Mead. The unpopular Colonel Protheroe is found dead the in the vicar's study, more than one person admits to the crime, and there are suspicious archealogists in the surrounding area. The vicar, Mr. Clement, accompanies the police on some of their rounds, becoming the confidant of several villagers, including the astute Miss Marple, closest neighbor the vicarage. Miss Marple plays it cool, and in the end, helps save a...more

I'm going to review all Christie's books/stories with one review. She's an awesome author. The reader gets a peek into aristocratic English life of a much earlier time period. The stories are all plot-driven, with sketchy characters, and sometimes contrived clues, but the plots are INTERESTING and keep the reader involved. There's a lot of violence, blood, guts, and evil--off screen/page--but no voyeuristic sex in great detail, thank heaven!! These books are as nice to read as curling up in your ...more

My parents used to watch Miss Marple mysteries on TV, and I never found them even remotely interesting. They always seemed dry, dull, and relentlessly boring.
So I was not thrilled to be assigned the first Miss Marple mystery for my Detective Fiction course. I sucked it up and checked it out... and found myself completely drawn in.
The writing is excellent, the pace is good, the mystery (as always with Christie) is fascinating, and the characters were all interesting.

Miss Marple makes her first appearance in this marvelous little British cozy. The main character is the narrator, the Vicar. He's a very charming and discerning man. The mystery, involving the death of a stinky old blowhard of the Colonel Blimp type, is entertaining and the plot is well done. (Have you ever noticed how many of Christie's victims are nasty sorts?) Miss Marple comes on stage as a village character and soon develops into a sweet if sharp old thing. I loved this book and have read i...more

Agatha Christie's weird for me. She has good characters and that's generally why I read her books, but the endings are always soft and sort of vague.
"Murder at the Vicarage" involves Vicar Clement discovering a body in his library. It's a Miss Jane Marple book and the story is kind of slow moving and a little convoluted.
However, I did find the book enjoyable. I never read Christie novels thinking I'll be able to guess the culprit--too much is left to guesses--but I enjoyed t

"The Year of Mystery" continues!... This is one of Agatha Christie's earliest books, and her first one featuring Miss Marple. It's definite trademark Christie - lots of characters with continually unfolding motives, everyone is a suspect until the final reveal at the end. But it starts slowly and I had a hard time getting into it. Not my favorite of her books.

So the thing about Christie is that you can pick her books up anytime and plow through a well-drawn mystery and have a good time and not have to worry about anything. This is the first Miss Marple mystery. It's got a great narrator, lots of suspects, an unexpected finale. A great way to entertain yourself for a couple of days. What more do you want?

There's nothing like a classic murder mystery, and Agatha Christie always delivers. A jovial little book with plenty of twists and turns with a myriad of supporting cast to entertain for hours. A nice, quick read when you're not wanting to think too hard but not totally space out. :)

Has this ever happened to anyone: You are near the end of the book only to realize you've read it before? That happened to me on this book. Fun, easy reading. I plan on reading more of the Miss Marple series.

A man is found dead spralled across the desk of the Vicar who only hours before confessed that the world would be a better place with out him. Of course dear Miss Marple knows "Who done it", do you?

mystery lovers who love a good yarn and not blood and guts.
I love all the Agatha Christie books including the ones she wrote under "Mallowan" and "Westmacott". I like Miss Marple and Poirot and even (though my daughter doesn't)Tommy and Tuppence.

I love Agatha Christie and this was a very satisfying read. As I said to my husband, "If, during the course of the book, you suspect everyone of being the murderer, you'll be right!"

This is the one and only book I've read through in French. Not Camus, not Flaubert, but Christie! Because regardless of unknown words, I could always predict what was going on!

What can I say. It's Agatha. Very readable and entertaining. This was in the same cover with Sleeping Murder, so I went from the one directly to the other.

The first Miss Marple mystery. The usual red herrings and mechanical Christie plot. This early Miss Marple is more acerbic and less endearing.

The first Miss marple novel, it was written in 1930 when Christie had been a prolific writer for 10 years and she was at the top of her form.

Miss Marple is actually in the background of this story, which I liked. The vicar is very funny and I liked his wife, Griselda.
