One and a half stories into this collection, and I think I may have a new favourite author.
Contains about a dozen short stories of the hit and miss variety. Some are quite lovely and some quite horrid. The author might fare better with a full-length novel, but I wouldn't wager my own money on it.
I liked several of the stories in this book, especially the first and the last one, but found the collection as a whole to be a bit uneven. Some of the stories seemed almost voyeuristic, offering fleeting glimpses of various forms of human depravity and misery that left me feeling a bit bleak. Not that that's a bad thing. Boudreau is a good writer and the comparison to Lorrie Moore is apt, but Moore's stories also have a warmth and humour to them that I missed here.

I'm not really sure what i expected from this book. I read almost all of it, but only because I kept hoping the next short story in the book would be brilliant. Yes, there are a few clever tales that leave you going hmmmmmm, but other than that I wouldn't brag about the book. Im sure it will be soon forgotten, along with it's quirky strange stories. At no point in reading this did i get hooked. In fact im not even sure why i read as much of it as i did.
