Walls of Ash is a great first novel. It has relatable characters and a mystery that kept me guessing all the way to the end. Amber Newberry also shows us a worldliness in her novel that is not seen in most present day novels; characters speaking different languages, they constantly travel and have in depth knowledge of people and places that are not the only place they live. I can't wait to read the next installment!

I have to preface this with the fact that I don't like historical books. I don't read historical books. Having said that, I was asked by the author to read and review this book.
I was surprised, pleasantly so. This book can be a tad slow at times, but the development of characters and storyline keep you interested and wondering just who is ultimately responsible for everything that is happening until the end. There is little I hate more than reading a mystery where I've figured out the villan by

"Walls of Ash" is a compelling tale of what it means to 'rebuild'. The house of Rhineholdt towers over the land and carries the burden of whispers late at night, secrets, and mystery. The reader cannot help but be seduced by the flighty, yet charismatic narrator, Tamsin. Unconventional and brave, she seeks to answer the questions of her family and her past. The reader is taken on a winding and adventurous journey of mysticism and fear, but yet still learns the valuable lesson of learning and ...more

I was very impressed by this book. It is the first novel published by Amber Newberry and it was wonderful. The story was very engaging and I had a hard time putting it down. It was well thought out, the characters were likable and well written, and it was full of lovely plot twists and suspense. The only tiny criticisms that I have, would be that there were a few grammatical errors and that a few parts in the story seemed rushed and/or a bit forced; but nothing that hindered me enjoying or ...more

I was pleasently surprised by this first novel by Amber Newberry. The author provides a well developed story unfolding in a rich background and details that bring the characters to life. The author is able to weave a tale of mystery and suspense that kept me guessing until the end of the book. The story is well written and keeps the reader interested without the use of vulger language that is often found in today's novels. I recommend this book to fans of gothic/historic novels with mystery and ...more
