If you ask four random people who Shel Silverstein is, one will say, "You mean the Paint Store?", one will say "I LOVE 'Where The Wild Things Are'" and unzip her hoodie to reveal a P.B. and J stained t-shirt emblazoned with its ubiquitous cover image, One will praise "Where the Sidewalk Ends", and one will say,"No way-'A Light in the Attic' kicked 'Sidewalk's' ass".
All of them will be dipshits.
Because you don't know Shel Silverstein until you've read his "adult" book,"Different Dances". I will r...more

Entirely brilliant. Subversive, hilarious, filthy, delicious, twisted, disgusting, inspiring, and delightful. How the execrable The Giving Tree could spring from this same pen is beyond me. I suppose even Uncle Shelby had to pay the bills. But this book here is what it's all about, bringing to mind the old Spider Robinson quote - something along the lines of "Funny men make better lovers, they understand pain." I've loved this book forever, and was elated to find a first edition at Powell's the...more

So so so so so so so so so good!

This is an ADULT book with adult content. This book focuses on drawings, there is virtually no poetry.

Very profound, thought provoking, and filled with dark biting humor.

Love, love, love. Shel Silverstein is a genius, he can say more with a few line drawings on a page than others can in volumes of metaphors and similes....

OMG - No wonder this was in the "mature" section at 1/2 Price Books. This is not for kids... at all.

Shel Silverstein brings his incredible talent to bear on social issues, sexuality, and politics. Very few words, more pictures and mini-stories told with pictures. Sometimes funny, other times disturbing, but often very poignant.

A few great cartoons, some average, and some weak. A good but not great collection, and certainly not Silverstein's best. Also, the kind of book that can be read cover-to-cover in 40 minutes or so.

!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Words can't explain how awesome these pithy and profound cartoons are.

My public library shelved the "adult" cartoons (Bloom County, Doonesbury) alongside tripe like "Garfield." This was great for me as a precocious child, as I sampled from both categories. After checking this one out (I must have been 9 or 10), I was shocked to see Silverstein's cartoons were of a graphically adult nature. When my mother found this out as well, the book was taken from me.

In her defense, she never was or is a Puritan; however, when you are the parent of an already-precocious child,...more

Devastating.

Silverstein's sly wit and pointed commmentary are aimed at adult themes this time: bigotry, intolerance, homophobia, the true meaning of Christian sacrifice ("They Forgot The Nails" will wreck you), dehumanization, vanity, love, and all manner of human folly. His line drawings are as sparse as ever, but they gain a new economy given the amount of nuance they convey as they illustrate sophisticated feelings.

It's not always critical, but sometimes uplifting. Some of his cartoons will...more

Shel at his height. All of his best work for Adults. In my mind intellectual kids as well. This is a book to be proud of, and to be proud of owning. I most cetainly am. I read it often. My 1st copy I purchased from a Hippie on Haight Ashbury for 50 cents..I was a handsome devil then. Still remember her smile. A must have for any adult or adult level Youth. Honestly by todays standars it is very light fare. Well done, well drawn, well made book. Grabbed a Mint copy before San Fran lost its best bo...more

I heard about this book about a decade ago and tried to buy a copy but found that it was out of print and all the copies that were still around were grossely over-priced. Just recently though, I learned that it was finally reprinted and I couldn't wait to get my hands on it. Silverstein's social, political, and spiritual commentary is perceptive and timeless. I believe this is one of his best works and I would recommend it to anyone who enjoyed his less adult themed material.

It wasn't at all what I expected, and some of it I didn't actually get. I guess I'm not intellectual enough? It was still very interesting to see another side of Shel Silverstein that I've been struggling to see, due to the fact most of his stuff is now out of print. So for the simple fact that they decided to re-release this and once again make it available to the public, I am very grateful.

Very good. Pretty darn lewd, but then again, I knew what I was getting myself into. This commentary really is as relevant today as it was when it was written. Sometimes the cartoons make me sad, but they are generally pretty funny and insightful. Some of them come off as misogamist, but others are the exact opposite.

Loved reading Shel Silverstein as a kid. This is definitely an adult book. I did not think it was very good at all. Packed with a bunch of provocative and raunchy drawings. I laughed at maybe two of the bits. Worries me that kids and parents may check this one out without really looking inside.
Ginny
The best of the best of Shel!! Amazing commentary on the world that was true in the 70's and is still true today. His observations on human nature are spot on. He brings clarity to concepts through sparse context and graphics alone. Of course, this is no children's book. Adults only please!

Anyone who grew up loving Shel Silverstein really owes it to themselves to check out this colection of his more "mature" works. These cartoons range from hilarious to terrifying, but all are marked with Silverstein's signature cleverness and wit, and simple elegance of style.

The Silverstein you never knew but always wanted to. I gave this book to a close friend for her wedding. I imagine that this collection of cartoons resonates particularly well with the adventure of building a family.
Mikayla Knight
Didn't read it so much as perused it. It's a collection of narrative drawings, all of which have some sort of message or point. It would be a great coffee table book for use as a conversation starter.
Rebecca
This book is not for anyone who is uncomfortable with nudity, bodily functions, and adult themes. I think it is fantastic especially coming from Silverstein who is more well known for children's poems.

one of the most influential books for a 12 year old blossoming male... clearly shel's most insightful work! (not for kids, but that's what makes it great as a kid)

This is the adult's dirtier & more twisted version of some of his most famous children's poems/cartoon collections such as Where the Sidewalk Ends.
Jon
One of the oddest books by Silverstein - not for kids! Over sized and hard to find - thankfully I was given a copy by a wonderful friend.
Eric
The original book is a collectors item and I am very glad to own one. Mind blowing art and quick offensive stories. They're great.
Emily
goddamit i hate shel silverstein... the only good thing he's ever done was the giving tree and even that is just a maudlin piece of sh*t...
Megan
A picture is truly worth a thousand words - an Silverstein speaks truthfully through his images

I'm sure there are many, MANY more works by Silvertein that I'll find to read to my kiddies. :)

Crude adult humour from Shel Silverstein, known mostly for his children's books.

Really fun to read as a cynical adult who enjoyed Silverstein's children's books.
Adam
A rare adult Silverstein. Very interesting view of an astonishing artist
