I bought a full set of Rawlinson's famous mid-19th translations on ebay late last year. Surprisingly they were not that expensive, the only blemish being the original owner's dated signature on an inside page of the first of the four volumes. (Robert R Watts, Charterhouse College, 1858!)

This first volume (of nine) covers plenty of ground centred around the origins of the Greco-Persian animosity, prefaced by a 150 page introduction by the translater about Herodotus and his world. Rawlinson was hi
