I like to be as informed as possible before making purchasing decisions, so I love books like these and Baby Bargains is one of the best. This edition was published in 2007 and the newest edition (the 8th) isn't scheduled to be released until two weeks before my due date, so I feel like I'm not getting the most up-to-date information. I'm not a first time parent, so I have some idea of what some of my "must-haves" are and what I don't really need and the authors and I don't always se...more

This book was helpful, but not quite as bargain oriented as I was expecting (especially after reading Bridal Bargains years ago). Even products you don't typically hear seasoned moms recommending (like diaper pals) were advocated for in this book. They championed the Britax car seat, and the Bugaboo strollers -- some of the most expensive brands out there -- but, good to know! Most sections are skim worthy. I found the stroller/carseat section particularly valuable though. A lot of it is go...more

As a first time parent-to-be, I was completely lost in terms of what we needed to prepare for the baby. I don't have too many close friends who have kids, so I didn't have that many resources to seek out for advice. I was turned onto this book by a friend, and it has been our baby bible! It is so helpful in terms of detailing not only what you need, but how much you "need" to spend on each thing. For instance, I probably would have bought a $$$ crib thinking it was safer for the ba...more

Upon finding out about the impending arrival of Little Buchs, one of my first thoughts was, "how do I avoid all of the STUFF that seems to quickly accumulate when there's a kid around?" Living in a city home with limited space and storage, this is a huge concern for me! Luckily my doctor has a similar mindset and recommended this great book to me. Baby Bargains outlines what baby gear is necessary and what is a total waste of money while providing thorough and thoughtful reviews to hel...more

Obviously this book has a fairly limited audience: people who are about to buy a whole bunch of baby stuff. So I'm not really recommending it widely, but for its intended audience, it's excellent. I love rating systems and reading user reviews since I'm a fairly picky shopper (read: cheap). This is a whole book of ratings and reviews, but it's more than that, too. As someone who really didn't know anything about baby gear-- what's necessary, what's extra-- this book was a great introduction ...more

expectant parents
Without this shopping guide, I could not have overcome the overwhelming task of researching and preparing for my first baby. In fact, I regret that I hesitated to pick it up when it was first recommended to me. This book is much more than a bargain guide. It is the only comprehensive source of baby gear reviews and practical recommendations that I found, and the authors are not financially incentivized by manufacturers unlike many websites which receive advertising support. I have the 2008 edit...more

i'd definitely recommend this book to new parents but with a rather large grain of salt. it's great to see reviews of things like car seats and cribs - things i knew nothing about before needing them, HOWEVER, the authors don't put much stock at all into some of the things i really care about, the main one being eco concerns. they state in a few different places in the book that there is no evidence to suggest that off-gassing substances found in certain plastics or fire retardants are harmful,...more
I actually read the 2009 edition, and it was fantastic. I was truly clueless about baby stuff prior to reading this book. I learned a lot about baby gadgets and how to make not only safe choices but choices that work for my lifestyle. I purchased a couple other books regarding this topic, but I like this book best because it is more thorough that Consumer Reports and makes product recommendations unlike Baby Gizmo.

This is the book that got me in the "baby mood". It started me thinking about everything I needed and wanted to have for my unborn child. It helped me make great decisions....However, looking back - after Kelly's first birthday, and realizing all the time spent looking for the oh-so-perfect item - practically all had been used and done with by year one. Finding the"right" exersaucer wasn't such a big deal in the end. Neither was the playgym. But, high-chairs, and baby mattres...more

I love this book! I got an earlier edition as a hand-me-down, but none-the-less I have found it so helpful. This book is a life-saver in helping you decide what you need/don't need for a baby, for putting together a baby registry, etc. It's superb, I highly recommend it to any expectant mother and consider it a must have!

You can get overwhelmed by all the info to review, even though they did the research for you. I figured out that I could skip to the Best Picks on brand for cribs, car seats, etc. near the end of each chapter and got a lot out of the boxes of Q&A or reviews form other parents.

This is another great book for first-time expecting parents. We had no idea initially what to get baby-gear wise, it is a whole new, and overwhelming world. This book had great reviews and ideas about what you really need.

Would have been great when I was pregnant and buying all my basic baby stuff, especially the stroller. My son is now 14 months and I still found some good info. Well worth checking out from the library at the least.

This was really helpful in baby stuff shopping. Especially stroller, car seat and crib shopping-- big ticket items that you want to get right the first time, before you have to assemble them on the living room floor.

I don't know what I would do without this book! It was recommended by a friend who is farther along in her pregnancy, and it has been a big help. This being my first pregnancy, I had no idea where to turn to find information on what I actually need (if you buy everything on those baby store "new parents checklists" you will be broke and will trip on baby stuff with every step you take!). The safety information was also incredibly helpful, especially with respect to cribs and bedding...more

I began this book after my cousin recommended it, and it is far more helpful and interesting to read than the Consumer Reports book. I haven't finished it yet, but I have learned so much already!

This book is a must for anyone who is expecting a baby! Not only will this book possibly save you money, but the authors evaluate and rate hundreds of products in many different categories. They also incorporate user feedback in their reviews.
One great feature of this book is the amount of information about what is useful and necessary when buying baby products. The authors disband the cloud of confusion that can overwhelm new parents.

One point that I'd make about this book is that their info is not always 100% current.
My husband and I insisted on a crib made in the USA, and a couple of the companies the Fields identified as having such did not. We found that those companies manufactured baby furniture in the US, but all of their cribs were made outside of the country. (And others assembled cribs in the US from parts manufactured elsewhere.) In the authors' defense, that wasn't the case at the time the latest i...more

When registering for baby items, this book was my bible. Everyone has an opinion on highchairs, strollers, etc. and this book helped me make my own knowledgeable decisions.

just about every expecting mom/family I knowrecommends it for: future parents
Any person/couple who is thinking about having a child should consider picking up a copy of this book. The resources are amazing, and the book is well organized. The text is accompanied with an extensive set of online resources, including a website with timely updates. My only suggestion is to take what the authors say about buying a used crib with a grain of salt (they say it is a BIG no-no, while I know at least a dozen kids who have slept in used cribs and survived). I was also a bit disa...more
