In Jorden's two-part books you learn spoken Japanese, the two books are all in romanization, but she wrote a third separate book on Japanese script called 'Reading Japanese' which covers all the Kana and 425 Kanji. All three books cover the equivalent of a 1-1½ year course at university and will bring you to the intermediate level.
