Inspired by a substitute high school math teacher (who was really an engineer), Mr. Moretto began his thirst for life-long learning, which would lead him from the French Air Force to R&D at Citroën, then to become a régisseur at the Comédie Française. After coming to the United States, he became technical director at Illinois Wesleyan University, and then at Columbia College in Chicago. He was also a member of the Adler Planetarium in Chicago. Mr. Moretto recently taught the principles of Fear No Numbers at a school for at-risk youth in France. Mr. Moretto became a U.S. citizen in Danville, Illinois, in 1974.
Have you ever heard your child say, "I don't like math!"? Well, fortunately, my kids love math, but in my time substitute teaching, I have had numerous students ask me, "When am I ever going to use this in my life?". To that, I answer, you may not ever need to use this particular math problem, but learning how to solve problems and work through a process or formula will help you later in life. I can admit that I wasn't a huge fan of math and even cringe a bit if I have to teach it, but once I have the formula, I can usually figure any problem out. In FEAR NO NUMBERS, Moretto gives us another way to process math. By using his formulas and systems, you will be able to simplify large numbers as well as learn a shorter method for solving division problems. Maybe, just maybe, you will even find math....fun!
My aunt and uncle are both retired math professors and so I have grown up with my Aunt Kathy showing me fun math problems or neat tricks for math. When I saw this book, I thought it might be just another way I could learn more about math both for our kids and for me when I am scheduled to teach math.
All of the methods in this book are simple and carefully explained. There are plenty of examples and ways for you to try out the formula on your own, with or without a calculator. Along with the methods and formulas, the author also teaches the reader various areas of math history which I found to be interesting. Learning the formulas and reasons behind them can help you not just in math, but in your way of thinking.
This would be an excellent book for those with an upper elementary to middle school aged child who is struggling with math or just the opposite, loves learning about math. I think they will have fun trying out the formulas and finding the new ways to work on multiplication and division problems. This book will teach them another step in the process of checking their work.
The author, Mr. Moretto, is giving an approach to teaching kids an easier way to multiply and divide. Mr. Moretto saw the level that the young ones were rated in 2010 in math and science. He felt that they needed an addition to what they were currently learning. Thus, FEAR NO NUMBERS. Some readers might recall the "casting out nines" for checking your arithmetic. It isn't taught much anymore though. Mr. Moretto sets a firm foundation for that method.
Mr. Moretto's "Proof by 9 system (TM)" is a theory to look at the problem in a different way using fast and simple ways. He states that it's not likely that "you can do every multiplication and division operation exact each and every time. " The ,author shows examples that are clear that shows the technique. I wished that the author had shown some examples of unsuccessful problems This method is easy to use. I liked the fact that he encourages and helps the reader understand that everyone makes mistakes. The utmost objective is to realize that you must recognize when that happens and how to fix it. This is a new era and with that we need easier and more efficient ways of doing things. I myself, am going to keep trying this method. I would recommend this book to everyone, young and old. You're never to old to learn. I feel that the author has introduced a method that can save time and money. We just have to adjust our attitudes that there are better ways. Pick up[ a copy and decide for yourself. If you have a child that is having difficulty with his numbers, this book may help.
I would give this book 4 STARS.
I was given a complimentary copy of FEAR NO NUMBERS by the author, Jose Paul Moretto for this honest review.
Fear no numbers by Jose Paul Moretto is a quick read that can be of benefit to both math students and teachers. Although the book is short, only 33 pages or 48 if you include the preface and introduction, you will find yourself going over and over the pages to gleam all the knowledge contained within.
While Mr. Moretto's book may not hold the cure to all math phobias, the information held within its pages will relieve many anxieties. The main focus, of this helpful book, are the two theorem known as the proof of 9 system and the maXima system that can be used to check the answer of any multiplication or division problem. Some of the other information that can be gleamed out of this magnificent book includes a magical property of 9 that was first discovered by the ancient Greek philosopher and mathematician Pythagoras.
The best thing Mr. Moretto does in his book is that after explaining these theorem he gives you problems so that you may apply what you have learned. By the time you do the practice problem you should easily use the maXima system to quickly check any multiplication or division answers.
I would recommend this book not only for those currently in school or teaching math but to everyone that uses math in their daily lives.
FEAR NO NUMBERS: HOW TO MULTIPLY OR DIVIDE & ALWAYS GET IT RIGHT by Jose Paul Moretto is a Non-Fiction/Mathematics/Arithmetic. An interesting take on old problem,Math. The #9 becomes 0 and so much more. Multiplication and Division made a little easier by the "Proof by 9 system". If you have a child who is having difficulty in Math or Division that this title may help your child. An interesting book. Educators and parents alike should pick up a copy. Received for an honest review from the publisher and/or author. RATING: 4 HEAT RATING: NONE(NON-FICTION/MATHEMATICS/ARITHEMTIC) REVIEWED BY: AprilR, Review courtesy of My Book Addiction and More
Great book to learn how to multiply and divide. I was not very confident before reading this book and now have a better grasp on how to multiply and divide without panicking.
