On Liberty
In "On Liberty," John Stuart Mill begins by writing, "The subject of this essay is not the so-called 'liberty of the will', so unfortunately opposed to the misnamed doctrine of philosophical necessity; but civil, or social liberty: the nature and limits of the power which can be legitimately exercised by society over the individual." It is this concept that is at the heart...more

WARNING: Some of my political views are discussed in this VERY LONG review. I don't think there is anything offensive but with politics, you never know. Therefore, in case anything I say upsets anyone, I have included several very CUTE kitten photos by way of apology.

John Stuart Mill was ahead of his time. In 1859, he published “On Liberty,” which is a declaration for freedom, tolerance, and individuality. It is a short and very accessible work that contains the intellectual underpinning of modern liberal democracies. Although a philosopher, Mill is highly readable, especially when one starts at the beginning. Mills articulated ideas that I have long cherished, and he writes with conviction and polish.

It's amazing how it appears as if the older the work, the more relevant it is to today. Sure, this is anything but 'old' in comparison to Socrates and other writers, but this over 150 year old document still serves well today, definitely worth the few hours reading and I recommend it to everyone.

This book is a classic. Giving due credit, I must acknowledge Prof. Keith Eubanks for inadvertently turning me on to Mill. I think Eubanks once quoted Mill, perhaps in his course syllabus, and I found the quote (something about expecting more from students, and how they will perform to these higher standards given the expecatation and opportunity) intriguing.
Anyway, if you're interested in learning where I get a lot of my thoughts on being an individual, read this book (or read essays/books by...more

Notes:
Tremendous rhetorical talent. Engages with his potential critics well. The instances of values dissonance are especially striking given how much Mill's work informs many of our modern views of the world.
There are some weak points in his argument, but most are not weak because they are wrong -- rather, he relies quite heavily on some premises that he doesn't even explicitly mention, let alone justify; and this is not a matter of his being concise.

Mill is one of those authors who you feel that you’ve read, even though you have not, because other people quote and misquote and reinterpret his basic thoughts in their own work. He is, of course, is the guy who says you should be allowed to do pretty much whatever you like, provided you don’t hurt anyone, and that the government should leave you alone. The thing which struck me most strongly while listening to On liberty is Mill’s defence of the right of people to own poisons. The recent, sad...more
Mill's inconsistent treatment of liberty is so schizophrenic that is seems to be written by two different people, a Dr. Jekyll and a Mr. Hyde. His flashes of brilliance are marred by his incongruous forays into authoritarianism. It is incredible to me how anyone can read this book and come away viewing it as a legitimate defense of liberty. Mill is clearly guilty of wanting to have his cake and eat it too, and the resulting work is a litany of completely irreconcilable rules for civil society.

This book was read for, or at least during, Tim Little's course in European History at Maine Township High School South. Being one of the first books we'd ever read in political philosophy, it was doubtlessly very influential. Later, in graduate school, I had occasion to read the author's Utilitarianism as well.
Tim Little himself was a very influential figure at our school. He'd been around a while, so many of my older friends, themselves influential, had had him for Advanced Placement history....more

Whether or not one is sympathetic toward or convinced by his philosophical positions, Mill’s arguments are always worth listening to. They are inevitably clearly articulated, logically arranged, and elegantly expressed, and their reading is a pleasure as well as an opportunity for mature and considered reflection. This particular work is based on two maxims. First, “the individual is not accountable to society for his actions, in so far as these concern the interests of no person but himself.” A...more

Excellent short book that tells us about the harm principle: you should be free to do what you want as long as you do not harm others. I think the basic idea in this book is that each person should be free to develop his or her own potential in a society where government and public opinion have limits. In other words, people should be free to do whatever they want even if their decisions are stupid, selfish and destructive. On liberty is an optimistic book about individual flourishing and the de...more
Near the beginning of On Liberty, John Stuart Mill states the over-arching idea of the book:
...the sole end for which mankind are warranted, individually or collectively, in interfering with the liberty of action of any of their number, is self-protection. That the only purpose for which power can be rightfully exercised over any member of a civilised community, against his will, is to prevent harm to others. His own good, either physical or moral, is not a sufficient warrant. He cannot rightful...more

J.S. Mill was my first "favourite philosopher". His work is a powerful argument for the freedom of individual conscience and action, as well as for the betterment of society. His defense of freedom of expression and personal liberty resounds with power and profundity even today; and indeed, we need it just as much today as we did when he wrote it. It is the work which shaped the modern Liberalism of which I consider myself a part, and has had a lasting affect on me and the way I see the world.

If I had my way everyone who wants to vote should be required to read "On Liberty".
But, hold on. One of Mill's points is that the State should do the least in coercing the individual. By forcing reading a book I would be having the State take away some Liberty from the people!
But, hold on. Mill says that the State has the onus to do what it needs to secure the Liberty of the people as a whole. A people who don't KNOW what Liberty entails cannot safeguard its existence! Take That! Requiring the r...more

I don’t like utilitarianism. So I thought I’d disagree with most of Mill’s arguments. Which I did, for the first two works. But with this one I was pleasantly surprised. I’m glad I stuck with the book because I loved “On Liberty”. I’m probably conditioned to love it as an American, because the Bill of Rights was heavily influenced by Mill.

Pamphlets regarding 19th century English liberty have many lessons for the reader of today. We take much of our freedom for granted, and even the most pro-government liberals among us will cringe upon reexamining the insidious ebb of personal freedom at the oncoming wave of legislative intrusion into our personal lives.

If I had done more research on Mill, i would have realized that I have yet again ventured on a libertarian-focused book. Sometimes I think that the books I read are subliminally advising me to be a libertarian. However, I take comfort in Mill's own philosophy that the freedom of discussion and listening (properly) to both sides of an argument is essential to human individuality. So according to Mill, I shouldn't be afraid of studying principles that may be against what I personally believe, beca...more
This book just did not resonate with me. The logic seemed sound, but it also seemed like he was rehashing the same thing over and over. Some of the better points:
- Societies tend to demand conformity, assuming that their way is the "true" way.
- Societies mistakenly assume that they are better than all previous societies.
- Diversity is good as long as it is not harmful to society.
- When there is no opposition, people fail to grasp the arguments for their way of life, and the society becomes weak,...more

What Mill's up to here is trying to figure out how we should best balance the interests of society with the liberties of individuals. There's nothing particularly groundbreaking inOn Liberty, but he's a solid writer and he makes very tightly argued, logical arguments that are easy to comprehend.

Considered one of the most articulate statements of classic liberalism. Mill is an influential proponent of "liberty of conscience, in the most comprehensive sense; liberty of thought and feeling; absolute freedom of opinion and sentiment on all subjects, practical or speculative, scientific, moral, or theological."

John Stuart Mill, British philosopher, political economist, civil servant and Member of Parliament, was an influential liberal thinker of the 19th century. He was an exponent of utilitarianism, an ethical theory developed by Jeremy Bentham, although his conception of it was very different from Bentham's.

“The only freedom which deserves the name is that of pursuing our own good in our own way, so long as we do not attempt to deprive others of theirs, or impede their efforts to obtain it.
