Is there any writer over the age of 35 who doesn't suffer from some sort of Back Challenge? In my case, things are complicated by neuromuscular /-skeletal problems, thus I can't pronounce myself "pain-free" after using the various designated poses in this excellent book, but I find myself taking less medication, needing fewer deep tissue massages (ouch!), resorting to the heating pad / TENS unit routine less frequently, and I recommend it strongly to anyone with a basic knowledge of yoga.

I appreciate the detailed explanations of the various types and causes of back pain. It is a good reference book which provides detailed instructions of the set of yoga poses that relieve each type of back pain. As a person who practices yoga, I find Dr. Fishman's descriptions very clear unlike other yoga books I've read. I borrowed this and his book on osteoporosis from the library but intend to purchase them for my personal library as references for my home practice. I recommend Dr. Fishman's ...more
As a long-time practitioner of yoga, I thought the descriptions of poses were very dangerously under-described and for a book that it supposed to be for injured people, it did not offer very many alterations for the postures. They don't even show people sitting on cushions (or even mention it!) to do seated forward bends with the hips uplifted. I feel sligh ...more

This book can help with back pain. I would recomend it.
Reviewed by a former yoga hater with sciatic pain. I'm adding lower back, quad, hamstring, and hip stabilization into my morning routine to hold the sciatic pain at bay and to prevent further injury as I age. This book covers the importance of yoga for back strengthening and suggests poses pinpointing specific pain including musculoskeletal pain, herniated disc, pinched nerve, arthritis, spinal stenosis and more. Also has poses for pregnancy and weight control and explains the various styles of y ...more
There's just too much pseudo-science here for me to take anything in this book seriously.
I was already familiar with most of the yoga history. It was broken down in a good way so that you can refer to your specific problem and see what exercises you needed to to.

Very detailed instruction with photos, broken down by dx. Very helpful to avoid reinjury.

Very good. Clear and didactic with exercises that really help. Even for beginners!!
