Short, dignified stories with the ring of authenticity. Robertson has a pleasing fixation with the genuine details of life - not just drama and plot mechanics, but the jobs people take to survive, the fixations they themselves develop without realising, the way friendships are maintained despite dissonance. Many of the stories sadly grasp too eagerly for closure in their final paragraphs, but some of the ones which don't are lastingly poignant. "The Claw" in particular is a beautiful study in ...more

James Robertson (born 1958) is a Scottish writer who grew up in Bridge of Allan, Stirlingshire. He is the author of several short story and poetry collections, and has published four novels: The Fanatic, Joseph Knight, The Testament of Gideon Mack, and And the Land Lay Still.
