We’ve read all but one of Cooper’s 25 novels; and somehow find ourselves no longer as enamored with her tales. Her two latest EJ Pugh stories were hardly exciting, with the amateur sleuth EJ coming across as little better than a common busybody. We tend to prefer the Sheriff Milt Kovak books anyway, as at least he is an official law enforcement investigator, even if he is a laid-back, good ol’ Oklahoma boy. In “Waters”, we get a dual tale of Milt going on a Caribbean cruise with family and ...more

Sheriff Milt Kovak wins a cruise and takes his wife, pre-teenaged son and Early, his son's best friend, along for a spring break. There are some strange things happening aboard ship, as an older boy enmeshes the two youngsters in his own plans. Meanwhile, back in Prophesy County, the acting sheriff learns that an ex-con has just moved back into town, a man who had vowed to kill those who testified against him after he murdered his wife. Of course, there's always something happening in Prophesy ...more

A little weak. Not sure I liked the skipping around between the cruise ship and the home front, and the sheriff, the kids, and the deputy sheriff. Just a little off putting. The story plots were OK and reasonable well developed.

Interesting that a sheriff and a psychologist don't know what their kid is doing on a cruise ship! Good read.

An interesting group of characters. This book had an interesting twist on a cruise mystery.
This is the first I've read in this long series.

For whatever reason I didn't want to like this book, but Cooper is a great story teller and drew me in. It was a very pleasant read in a niche of the genre I rarely visit. Excellent.

Susan Rogers Cooper is an American mystery novelist. A self-proclaimed "half fifth generation Texan; half Yankee", she sets her novels in Texas (the E.J.
