A french couple, Maria and Pierre, their daughter Judith, and a friend, Claire, are heading for Madrid, but a storm forces them to stop by in a small town. As soon as they arrive, they're told that a murderer named Rodrigo Paestra - a man that has killed his wife and her lover - is hiding somewhere nearby and the police are looking for him. Maria can't get the man out of her mind, and she develops a kind of contempt for the wife's lover, Toni Perez, while she's not judging Paestra. Eventually, a ...more

Ma ...more

As should be evident, Duras's work has become increasingly more important to me the more I read and re-read her work. My intention is to read everything from Moderato cantabile on, though I'll probably get around to earlier works as well (at least Le square, as it's included in the "four novels by Duras" grove press edition I have).

The work always has such an urgency, a sublime understanding of something enigmatic: present here, though perhaps taken over into more of a mode of narrativity, give

Recommends it for: waiting in the sun-scorched fields

Possibly my favorite of the early Duras so far: love-triangular tensions among vacationers in Spain find a kind of outlet through the arbitrarily crossed story of a murderer on the loose in a village. Unlike a lot of Duras' work, the story here is conveyed as much through direct action as through dialogue, giving this one much more immediacy and urgency. As well as, frequently, a very vivid sense of place and landscape. While maintaining familiar, semi-soothing-against-the-material Duras cadence ...more

This reads similar to the earlier Moderato Cantabile in that here we also find the following in the aftermath of a crime of passion: a woman with a drinking problem in the grips of existential despair, her small child with whom she has an ambiguous relationship, and the slow building of a love triangle. The difference is that in Moderato Cantabile, the woman is the one indulging in the affair, whereas here it is her husband who is transgressing. The love triangle in MC is also rather lopsided, w

"Maria dort. Elle en est certaine. Si elle insistait, elle rêverait. Mais elle n'insiste pas. Elle ne rêve p ...more

A middle-aged married couple, their four year old daughter, and a young woman, traveling to Spain on vacation, are stranded by a storm in a hotel, in a port city. Meanwhile, a man in that city has just killed his wife and her lover, and is being sought by the police.

This has more plot and action than the two other Duras novels I have read, and the style is somewhat different; it does not all take place as dialogue, and in fact much of it takes place in the consciousness of the main protagonist

A very brief novel and my first Duras. She’s at times a gorgeous if economic writer, but other times her writing feels repetitive, staccato, and awkward, although this could also be due from the translation. The story itself is interesting enough: Four tourists spending the night in a small town find themselves in the midst of a manhunt, and the book relates one woman’s experience when she finds the man while simultaneously discovers a betrayal within her group. Overall though, I wouldn’t say th ...more

Oh, how intense was this, wasn't it? It was lovely to see during the first half of the novel how the weather reflected the physical and emotional states of these characters. For some reason the immediate bond between Maria and Rodrigo drew my attention the most. Therefore this image of a mirror where one becoming the reflection of the other developed quickly in my mind ending up with her always calling out his name. Now on the other side, regarding the love triangle which is the main plot of the ...more

Bra längd på d ...more

Most of the time when you're reading a book you can see where it's going. This is not one of those books. It follows the characters not the story, so yes, you can see where the characters are going, but the story itself is a constant surprise.

Do I like this? I do, but I think I still prefer a book in which the characters are a surprise and the story can be seen a mile off.

Marguerite Donnadieu, better known as Marguerite Duras (pronounced [maʀgəʁit dyˈʁas] in French) (April 4, 1914 – March 3, 1996) was a French writer and film director.

She was born at Gia-Dinh, near Saigon, French Indochina (now Vietnam), after her parents responded to a campaign by the French government encouraging people to work in the colony.
