The Hobbyist is a coming-of-age story masked as a sex addict's roller coaster. Based upon true events, the author authentically chronicles sexual awakening from a man's perspective as he pulls back the curtain, and with staggering honesty, invites you into his private world of decadence. Not to be confused with a book on recovery, this raucous account is a cautionary tale ...more

This was a fascinating look into the rarely-spoken of world of sexual addiction. Although it is a novel and therefore fiction, the author drew on his own experiences in New York to give a realistic portrayal of a sexual addict.
The tension in the book is very effective. The author manages to catch our attention from the beginning and slowly starts building up the anxiety and fear that the protagonist feels. In a way, we are just as surprised as he is when his life starts spiraling out of his cont

I received this novel for an honest review. Although the content is out of my usual scope I did enjoy it. It is not very often I read novels from the man's perspective, especially when that man is a confessed sex addict. The characters were well done and believable. The writing flowed nicely, making you feel as if you were hearing and witnessing someones confessions as apposed to reading a work of fiction. This is an intense personal story but not for the faint of heart, he is after all an ...more

This book was a wonderfully compelling read. While it states that it is inspired from life events I am unsure how true that would be. I got the sense that the author wanted this to seem like a life unfolding from these pages and it worked. The main character was empathically distant from almost everyone and throughout the book details almost exclusively sex and intimacy. Sex and intimacy were the primary motivations for life and adventures through call girl and BBW bars only proved it. Poverty, ...more

I agreed to read and review this book, completely unaware of the real meaning of the word ‘hobbyist’. God alone knows what I thought the book was about.
Turned out to be a hilariously funny mixture of Mrs Robinson and The World of Susie Wong, if you get my drift. A young man’s sexual education, encompassing his many and varied encounters with the opposite sex. So well educated in fact, that he ends up in Sex Addicts Anonymous. Why anyone would think they needed to, is beyond me. I mean, it is har

The Hobbyist by Darryl Shelly is phenomenal contemporary fiction novel that will blow readers away. A novel that is inspired by true story. Darryl Shelly's writing is bold, impressive, and visually stunning. The psychological perspective into the protagonist is amazing. Readers won't be able to get enough of this The Hobbyist which features a coming of age theme. A young man portrayed as a sexual addict in New York while he deals cautiously with heartbreak and falls into manhood. A raw enticing ...more

I recently received a Goodreads first-reads copy of "The Hobbyist" by Darryl Shelly. This was a really difficult novel to read - easy to get through, but the subject matter was disturbing and sad. The back of the book reads that it is "based upon the true events of the author". We follow along as the title character, Dash, spirals steadily out of control. He is a sex addict. I guess I never gave much thought to the fact that sexual addiction is as painful and lonely and devastating as any other ...more

I received this book for free through GoodReads giveaway.

It is hard to rate this book because it is not a book I would have bought off a shelf but after reading it I would recommend it to others. The Hobbyist is not only a book about an addict but of a young man growing up and finding himself. The main character, Dash, struggles throughout the book knowing that his addiction is wrong, but can't seem to pull himself away from it. I think the book shows that the people in your life do have a big i

Well. Even though I read the back of the book for a briefing on what I was getting my self into I was still not expecting that. The Hobbyist is very interesting to say the least for someone who has lived a sheltered life. I was very surprised and put off by the entire subject. And even though if I had known what the book was completely about I would not have picked it up or even taken a second look I still enjoyed it. It is a very very good book. And I would recommend it to anyone, mostly ...more

I received this book as part of the Goodreads First Reads giveaway.

Not knowing what to expect after winning this book, I was pleasantly surprised. While the genre of story wasn't something I typically read, I found it to be a fast, enjoyable read. It was interesting to read about sexual exploits from a man's point of view. So much different than a woman regarding sex and relationships. Living in NYC, it was surreal to think about the things that take place a few blocks from where I live. It gave

The novel is a thought provoking yet enjoyable, light read. What makes THIS a hobby until the matter turns for the worse and becomes an addiction? That was one question that continually replayed in Dash's mind. At first, the act was perceived as an indulgence to satisfy his physical needs and longings. However, as the story progressed, it became a hindrance and the downfall for Dash both physically, mentally, socially and emotionally. What made the novel so appealing and unable to put down was ...more

This is not a book I would normally choose to read. i won a Goodreads first-reads copy. I found it a very interesting and it was easy to get into. The characters were all flawed in one way or another. I loved the way they were flawed and how they struggled to be better people. It was great how Dash was always there for his friends. He had a rough time connecting in a relationship but you always felt he cared for those around him. Despite his problems he wanted to be a better person. I think that ...more

First of all, I won the Goodreads First Reads giveaway for this novel. I was extremely excited to read it, and, let me tell you, The Hobbyist was incredible. The words were so honest. I really admired Darryl Shelly's writing style and was heartbroken at times and captivated at others. Overall, this is a must-read novel that won't take too much of your time, but will be well worth it. I highly recommend it!

I got this book through Goodreads First Reads and at first I was a little iffy, but I'm glad I read it. I don't agree with him on everything, especially since he is looking through a very narrow lens on what the reasons are that someone may becomes a sex addict. But this is his story and he tells it well and I applaud him for his courage. It was not what I thought it would be but was a good story and worth reading.

This book was chosen by one of the patrons in our book club. It was interesting to see a man's view of sex through his sexual adventures. What made it easy for me to read was that he was not completely selfish! He cared that his partners were satisfied. He was capable of love and was hurt when he lost it.... See, men have feeling too, they just have their warped way of dealing with it.... It was an okay book.....

This book was my first winner of the Good Reads contest that I have won and I'm really impressed! This book was very unusual because it looks at things in a male view and it is refreshing to have that! The subject matter was that of a sex addict and being a male myself I can totally relate! Not that I myself is addicted to sex but I'm all guy and love it. This was one of the best books I've read in a long time.

I just finished this book which I had received from the First reads giveaway. It was extremely interesting as it was about a man's struggle with his addiction to sex and the affect it had on not only his relationship with females but also his males friends. It discusses his low point in his life and a lost relationship that finally made him change his ways and break his self-destructive cycle of addiction.

I won this book through Goodreads First reads and I have to admit when I started it, I was a little skeptical. But I ended up loving it! Dash's journey of self discovery drew me in. He was the character that you love but have no idea why you love him. He's a pig. He uses women for sex but you love him. The story with Masha had me in tears but then again, the end had me laughing and so happy for Dash to have finally figured out life. Definitely a must read.

Review:

This novel is a light AND fast-paced reading. Well the hobby of the main character is well an addiction, an addiction to sex. You follow Dashs experience till this addiction turnes to something destructive for him in every social, mental aspect of his life.

I did not like the book, but is not a bad one, this one just wasnt for me. But either way I truly reccomend it, and well, give it a chance. The topic of the book is not something all others book have.

I found this book hard to put down. My favorite part in this book is page 153...."Nothing stinks more than the sour taste of regret - and you'll never know what it means to be a man till you find something worth fighting for. Do that, and you will always respect yourself." Applause to the man who said this.
