Shelves: novels, merkins
In this surrealistic novel, Whalen channels Invisible Cities and the dark satires of Gogol and Mrożek to create a disquieting and amusing story, written in an opaque and simple style, full of light comedy and fabulist fun. The narrator works for Ihre Magnifizenz, the President of a peculiar German university, filing a “report” on the events leading up to her disappearance. Populated by a cast of unusual Deans, such as the Dean of Muscle Tone, the Dean of Pessimism Overrun by Lapidary Meliorists, ...more

The President in Her Tower attempts to be both an experimental novel set in a mysterious university and a satirization of bureaucracy in academia. Of the two goals the first is accomplished (albeit the result is nothing special) but the second target was missed except for those with very specific life experiences.

I had the good fortune to read THE PRESIDENT IN HER TOWERS in manuscript form a few years ago, and it stuck with me so vividly that I knew it'd get nabbed up by a great press like Ellipsis. Few books combine sharp satire and true dread so successfully:

I originally bought The President in Her Towers after hearing Tom Whalen read at Unnameable Books. This eloquently simple text had so many surprises! It was hard for me to get in to the narrative at first since I'm a slow reader, but once I finally picked it up and dedicated myself to it it was quite rewarding. Within the small sentences you'll find everything from humor to dread. Definitely recommended to those who enjoy a satire.
