Arthur and the Dog Show by Marc Brown is a simple story in the Arthur series. Arthur wants to enter his dog Pal in a dog show. Lacking the depth of most Arthur books which have a slightly deeper plot and longer story, Arthur and theDog Show is heartwarming in the message it conveys that friendship is more important than winning a contest.

In this Arthur book, Arthur wants to enter Pal in a pet contest. He works with him over and over trying to teach him tricks but Pal doesn't ever seem to 'get it'. In the end they do go to the show and Arthur feels like although they've done their best it wasn't good enough but Pal goes to him and licks him and wags his tail letting him know it's okay...and the judges award him the most lovable pet award.
