Cynthia Moe felt God directing her to undertake a serious spiritual journey, leading to a 40-day fast. Hunger Pains marks her daily account of this extraordinary endeavor.
If you've ever wanted to master the discipline of fasting--whether it's for several hours or six weeks--Cynthia's story will give you both the knowledge and courage to finally discover this important spiritual discipline for yourself.
This is not an instruction book on how to spiritually fast, but rather an honest look at the mind, body and spirit while fasting. The author's thoughts expand deeper as the fast continues into days 20-29. In viewing the life of a christian, we start our lives a little weak, complaining bodies yearning for the next sensation of the Lord's presence. As days move to weeks, weeks move to months and months move to years, we develop a foundation of hope and faith. This is the same effect of a spiritual fast. We begin to recognized the Holy Spirit and God's will in our lives.
I've been inspired by this book in ways that few other books ever have. I've shared it with friends at my church, my pastor, his wife and a coworker. I'm truly moved by this testimonial if one woman who wants nothing more complicated and yet simple as to know God more fully. I wonder why this book came into my life at this time. Maybe God is asking me to think about walking more closely with Him too.
Excellent reflective questions at the end of each day. I read this simultaneously with my fasting, although our approaches were completely different. How the outside world reacts and carries on while we are seeking closeness with God was something that deeply resonated.
Despite having our unique relationship with God and distinct practices of faith, I was confused at the idea of drinking fruit juices as a fast. Essentially any caloric intake breaks a fast, but to each his/her own.
Do ever wonder about fasting? Have you considered doing a longer fast? Maybe even 40 days? If you answer yes to any or all of these questions then I highly recommend this book to you. It is a Woman's guide to fasting, but I think a guy could benefit from the overall concept as well.
Cynthia walks with you through a 40 day fast in her own journal along with scripture and thought provoking questions. As I embarked on my own journey it was like having a friend right by my side encouraging me and helping me. Many times I would be thinking or feeling something and the next day I would read about her own thoughts on the matter! This guide helped me to connect the physical part of fasting with the spiritual part in a healthy balance.
Even if you do not want to fast I highly recommend this book so that you can learn more about fasting. In either case it will encourage your walk with Christ.
Loved it! Growing up my parents didn't fast, or at least I never heard them talking about it... I knew it was something that Christians did but I didn't know why or how, and this book successfully answered all of my questions... I'll be recommending this book to others.
