I understand what McWatt was trying to do here, I really do. It's actually a really interesting idea to write about the mixed-race colonized ancestor of Jane Eyre: a direct challenge of the Anglo-Protestant superiority espoused by Charlotte Bronte could've been great. That said, no amount of authorial intent can make up for the fact that this was a steaming pile of modernist pooh.

And what was up with Daphne's obsession with body hair?
(8/10) Tessa McWatt has created an intruiging novel that raises questions of ethnicity, identitiy, and belonging, and does so through well-crafted prose and an intruiging, three-dimensional protagonist. Daphne's personal journey is captivating, although I felt the addition of the Oka crisis felt a little unnecessary and tacked-on. Not an earth-shaking novel, but well worth your time nonetheless.
