This is book five in the Constable Molly Smith series by Vicki Delany. However, this is the first one that I have read. I don’t feel that I was lost or left out because I hadn’t read the first books. This can definitely be read as a stand alone book. I will be going back and reading the prior books because I enjoyed this one so much.

Vicki Delany’s characters are vibrant and alive. I could just picture Jamie defiantly stuffing his blanket in his sleeping bag and setting off on an adventure at the

Molly Smith and her boyfriend Adam Tocek are both constables in the town of Trafalgar, British Columbia. Adam is also the handler of Norman, a highly trained police dog. Late one evening, Adam gets a call that there's a small boy missing from a camping area nearby, and all three of them respond. The boy is quickly found, unharmed, but Norman also finds some bones. Adult human bones.

These bones are quickly determined to be the bones of Brian Nowak, a man who disappeared fifteen years ago. In an u

Brothers and sisters tend to argue and Jamie and his sister Poppy aren’t exempt from disagreements. When the two get into an argument at the campground outside of Trafalgar, British Columbia, where the family is camping, Jamie is ordered by his mother to go into timeout. Jamie decides that he will show his parents that he won’t be treated in that manner. He stuffs his blanket in his sleeping bag and sneaks out of the tent to have his own private adventure. The adventure becomes scary for Jamie a ...more

Once again, Vicki Delaney has given us a mystery worth the wait. The fifth book in the Constable Molly Smith series, Among the Departed picks up seventeen months after the events in Negative Image that I reviewed last fall.

The discovery of human bones sets off an emotional chain reaction that affects the whole community. The bones are identified as Brian Nowak, a man who disappeared fifteen years ago. The angry son, Kyle, the withdrawn widow, Marjorie, and the devastated daughter, Nicky, begi

Having never read a Vicki Delany I took a leap of faith and plunged into book five of the Molly Smith series. I do not know what I have missed in the previous books, but this one left me with a rather flat feel. After the first two chapters, the book leveled out on a monotonous journey to a rather predictable ending and the lead characters resembled more of a flat Stanley than the multi-dimensional feel that persons of their positions and responsibilities should.

What began as a search for a litt

This is the first Delany mystery I've read, and I thoroughly enjoyed it. This is part of a series featuring Constable Molly Smith, in the town of Trafalgar, BC. Molly is getting comfortable in her relatively recent relationship with RCMP officer Adam Tocek. She is with him when he gets a call about a missing child at a nearby campground. Molly accompanies Adam and his dog Norman to the site to search for the boy, and find him unharmed. They also find some bones they suspect to be human, and a ne ...more

This is the fifth book in the Constable Molly Smith series set in Trafalgar, British Columbia. When bones belonging to Brian Nowak are discovered fifteen years after his disappearance a new investigation is opened. His daughter was Molly's best friend and Molly was one of the last people to see him alive before he disappeared. Molly and her boss, Sergeant John Winters begin to question former witnesses to see if they remember anything. Years later his family thought he left him for another woman ...more

This is the fifth title in the Molly Smith mystery series and one of the best. Despite the cozy British Columbia setting, the author brings the full range of evils to the laid-back town of Trafalgar, with flawed, but likeable characters.

Constable Molly Smith is with her boyfriend, Mountie Adam Tocek when Adam receives a call for the searching talents of Norman the dog in locating a missing boy in the wilderness campgroung. Norman not only finds the boy, but human bones that turn out to be Brian

Has a decent plot, and I liked the characters. One thing that bugs me about this series, though, is the way the author uses Molly/Moonlight Smith name throughout. I could understand the reasoning if Smith was used for the work scenes and Molly, or Moonlight used for personal. But when Molly is speaking to her friends (and especially her mother or father) and Smith is used...it just sounds odd. And I have to say I did get a laugh out of one scene (was supposed to be serious). Molly and her frien ...more

In a beautifully-written prelude, a little boy sneaks away from the campground where his family has promised him they will spot bears. Constable Molly Smith accompanies Adam Tocek and his dog Norman of the RCMP in the search and, along with the boy, they find human bones that have washed down the mountainside. As a constable, Molly’s usual routine is fairly boring and doesn’t include murder investigation. However, as in previous books, Detective Sergeant John Winters finds her knowledge of Trafa ...more

Police in the small Canadian town of Trafalgar find old bones in the woods, and open an old investigation.

For me, this book represents the danger of choosing an audiobook based on a two-line summary in the online catalog. I was expecting small-town Canada and an interesting cold case. I was not expecting descriptive prostitution, drugs, child pornography, violence, etc. I'm not denying that it was realistic, but those are not topics I read about for pleasure. I only finished it because I wanted

Fifteen years ago, Moonlight Smith (now Constable Molly) was among the last people to see her friend Nicky Nowak's dad before he disappeared. Now his bones have been discovered off a hiking path, not far from town. Was it an accident? Or murder? Sergeant John Winters reopens the case, but the surviving family members are not being very helpful. They, each in their own ways, have become quite strange since the disappearance of their dad/husband. This is another good entry in the Molly Smith detec ...more

A compelling mystery by a great story-teller.

Once again, Delany hits the mark with Among The Departed, a mystery set in BC's stunning mountain region. More than just a mystery-writer, Delany has a keen insight into the often strained family ties that are the backdrop for her tales. Realistic characters, straight-forward story-telling and an old-style mystery are the hall-mark of Delany's work

You won't be disappointed -- this one should be on any mystery-lover's summer reading list!

During the search for a missing boy, bones are discovered near a BC campground. This leads to the reopening of a 15 year old missing persons case, a father who left behind a very dysfunctional wife, daughter and son. Ostensibly this is about Molly “moonlight” Smith and Adam Tocek of the RCMP, however, the case of characters is fairly large and moves from one to another as each chapter opens. I found it confusing with very little hint about the mystery until the last couple of pages. There is muc ...more

Why would a happily married man suddenly disappear? When a search dog accidentally finds bones that are identified as Brian Nowak's, police constable Moonlight (Molly) Smith must cast her mind back to her childhood, when a sleepover ended with Nowak's disappearance. Molly must also face what happened to his family after the disappearance--how her friend, his daughter, eventually left town almost unnoticed. This terrific Canadian series just gets better and better.

This is the first of this series I have read and I enjoyed it.

The only part that bothered me was on page 10 where a distraught mother describes her child as wearing brown trousers and a white jumper (sweater), and the cop answers "red's good, the color'll stand out in the woods."

I was quite certain who the murderer was mid way through the book, but the side plots were able to keep me interested.

I will look for more books by this author.

She had me going down several roads until the end. I enjoyed going back to the past of the Smith family and the town of Trafalgar.
I am trying to remember if the other books in this series were printed with as many typos and misplaced words. Boo Poisoned Pen Press. Do not look to Spell Check to do your work for you.

I like this series and these characters but man are there a lot of typos and editing errors in this book. I also really hope Andy wasn't killed off just to satisfy another characters school boy crush. This one has a good mystery with a twist at the end that most will not expect. A solid entry.

Yes, it's a mystery about a man's skeleton discovered 15 years after he disappeared, but really that's the excuse to explore a small Canadian town outside of Vancouver (BC) and the law officers that keep the peace.

I enjoy the Molly Smith books. The characters are your every day group of people and the town is small that everyone know one another. Molly works for the a police dept. in Canada and things aren't always easy for her. The stories and scenery are fun.

Family drama. Molly and her Mom dealing with dad's death in last book. Main mystery is Molly's childhood friend's Dad's body being found 15 years later. Missing young teenage girl. Great mix of family dynamics in a small town. Good read.

This is another top-notch story from Vicki Delany. I enjoy the Molly Smith mysteries due to the main character's gumption and the enjoyable mix of eccentric characters and the down-to-earth fellow police officers that Molly works with. This story also included a nicely drawn mystery.

I found this book confusing - too many sub plots and characters. Using different names for the same characters added to the confusion (Moonlight, Molly, Smith). The main plot was interesting but predictable.

Fifth in the series featuring Constable Molly Smith of Trafalgar BC, this book kept my attention beyond when I intended to go to bed. Not my favorite of the series, but I'm glad I read it.
