Edit 04/18/2013: One of the reasons this series is so close to my heart is that me and my best friend shared such love for it and its characters, and it even brought us closer together in a way. She passed away this February, and even though it was one of the most painful experiences I'd ever had to go through, I still found myself smiling and even laughing when I took a whole day to skim through the entire series.

Eternally Yours, without a doubt, is Cate Tiernan’s best work yet. This third and final book of the Immortal Beloved series could not have brought a more brilliant and wholly satisfying conclusion to the trilogy. With as much cleverly-crafted wit, realistic depth and meaning as the previous books, with as much entertainment and magickal fun, it shines just as brightly as its predecessors. If anything, it is better; the humour is sharper, the characters better developed, the storyline a fraction more complex.

Our final visit to River’s Edge – a farm-like rehabilitation home for wayward immortals – reunites us with Nastaysa Crowe, our 450-year-old main character (give or take a few several years). Thinking back to her initial appearance at the start of Immortal Beloved – as a somewhat irresponsible party-goer with a tendency to run from all problems rather than face them – her transformation is incredible, though not unrealistically staggering. Of course, despite what cleaning dishes and tending to evil chickens has done for her, Nastasya wouldn’t be Nastasya without the occasional bleak remark or shower of pessimism. And her humour. It is infectious! Her excellence in sarcasm is incredibly entertaining, not to mention responsible for my public displays of guffawing (it livens up the morning commute, let me tell you that). This series would not be the same without dear old Nastasya.

Much of Nastasya’s personality is balanced by ex-northern raider and Viking hot-stuff Reyn. He puts up with little of her crap, pushing her into sword practice and constantly challenging her inability to accept herself. The complicated, death-tainted past they share is slowly driven away from between them, but their relationship is still far from simple. Nevertheless, Tiernan keeps her fans happy, and Eternally Yours is not deprived of sweltering scenes in our favourite hayloft. Better still, Reyn is suddenly all the more attractive with his adoration for the puppy he named Dúfa. This speckled little thing is his new companion, and aptly brings to surface the soft side of this hardened warrior. For me, these books have always felt more character-driven than plot, and Reyn and Nastasya’s relationship plays a large part in that. It’s honestly my favourite part of Nastasya’s journey.

Like the previous novels, there is an emphasis on the past with the occasional flashback integrated into the story. Normally historical settings are not something I am overly fond of, but Tiernan’s storytelling is exquisite and not limited to the comedy of present-day Nastasya. Four centuries of stories (from mildly grim to ghastly) build the reforming personalities at River’s Edge. While much of the book focuses on Nastasya’s time there, the danger of Terava magick is now more than just a smear in the distance and her role as the heir of the Icelandic House – one of the main houses of immortals – finally catches up to her. With that we are given a somewhat gruesome finale, but one that is thrilling and gripping.

Eternally Yours is not a short book, and despite its 450 pages, I felt a longing for more. I have become quite attached to this world and its characters, and it’s with bittersweet feelings that we part. I greatly look forward to whatever else Cate Tiernan may write in the future!

High four stars, maybe should rate it a five. I really did enjoy this. After some disappointment in book 2, this book came back solidly. Love Nastaya's droll remarks and some of the situations she gets into (naked chicken *Ü*). Lots of action and a little romance. Very happy with the conclusion to the series.

I had to read in hardcopy again as my library didn't have this in digital. I miss being able to easily highlight and then reflect on them at the end.

What I really am fond about the series is that there really are no great flaws in the books. It is very rare that you find such an author to both humor the readers as well as actually have them be interested in the books.

WOW! Such a good end to a series. I got really wrapped up in this one; knocked it out in about 24hrs.
My only complaint: I WANT MORE.
I would love to see Cate Tiernan put out some short POV's or novellas about some of the other characters. We got to meet a butt-load of new characters in Eternally Yours, and I would love to maybe go back in time and learn more about their histories, (Nas and Roberto? Reyn and Joshua?)I mean what happened there?!?

This book was just so perfect. I loved every page of it, Cate Tiernan really knew how to wrap everything up without it seeming too happily ever after or even too open ended. She always manages to be realistic in her books no matter their genre. Eternally Yours is my favorite book from this trilogy. The journey Nastasya took together with us was full of laughs, sarcasm, immaturity (mostly from Nasty), character development, great secondary characters, a complex yet hot romance, and most of all magick! I am a huge fan of her Sweep series so I was so glad that I picked up this series. At the beginning I would always compare it with her Sweep series but over time it started building its own distinctive voice and the comparisons stopped. Eternally Yours was the ending all fans of the Immortal Beloved series would want.

Nastasya, as usual, is still struggling with coming from a dark family. She is trying her best to stay good however there is always this seed of doubt that she won't be able to pull it off for the rest of eternity. The maturity (well most of the time) with her way of thinking shows us just how much she developed and grew as a character. Her romance with Reyn was also still as complicated as always because of her inability to stick long enough in a relationship to be called a relationship. Also with the addition of River's brothers popping up, Nastasya didn't think she'd be able to take the pressure. I really felt for her. Especially since her worries and problems finally have some importance to them. In this novel Nastasya finally solidifies some semi-friendships from Darkness Falls and actually starts new friendships. This was a definite turning point for her character since she has finally started to care for people, not just trying to impress them like how her friendship with Incy was like.

My only small issue is the amount of characters in this series. I honestly, till now, still couldn't keep up with all of them. Solis, Rachel, Charles, Asher, Anne, Brynna.. some of them were memorable but others were not. However I loved that this novel had more magick involved and many of the mysteries and our questions got solved and answered. Usually 400+ novels, like I've mentioned before, tend to drag or have fillers in them. However, Eternally Yours's 458 pages had a purpose toward the main plot and the overall understanding for the readers and the enjoyment level. I inhaled the full novel in three days. Three days that included traveling cross continent and spending hours with relatives and outside. I basically sacrificed my sleep because I just couldn't stop reading.

All in all Eternally Yours is really a great conclusion to this series. I am kind of disappointed that this is the end of Nastasya's journey because I just love her to bits. Cate Tiernan is officially one of the few authors I would blindly pick up their book without reading the synopsis because I trust that anything she writes I would love. (less)

Anyway, of the books in Cate Tiernan's 'Immortal Beloved' series, this one was definitely my favorite (though I loved the all too brief glimpses of River's past in 'Darkness Falls').

Nastasya is back at River's Edge after the whole fiasco with Innocencio in Boston. She's made a lot of progress, come a long way, grown as a person, and finally started to realize that everything River said about choices and how you always have them in entirely true.

But things can't stay peaceful too long at River's Edge. River's older brother, Ottavio, the King of the powerful Genoa House of immortals shows up and without preamble, says Nastasya doesn't belong there. He's an a-hole, but he's only trying to look out for his little sister.

Things are also progressing very quickly between Nas and Reyn, who are still very confused over their feelings for each other, considering their terrible shared pasts and how their families killed each other. Nas is terrified of admitting that she has real feelings for Reyn and is actually falling in love with him. She had already been married once, and that didn't turn out too well for her.

In the midst of this and Nas's continued path of self-discovery, River's other three brothers show up, all thinking Nas is evil incarnate and apparently not thinking River is a big girl and able to take care of herself. (And apparently Ottavio forgot that he and his siblings killed their own parents to steal their immortal powers and had plotted with River to kill their other three brothers--whoops).

Most of the book is daily life at River's Edge and Nastasya's path to self-discovery, much like the other two books. One would think that without a whole lot of action, the book would be boring, but Nastasya is a fun narrator and so very real that you can't help but be riveted by her story, and you can't help but keep pulling for her.

Mysterious occurrences at River's Edge and the news of the deaths of powerful immortals
around the world give the sense that something is building behind the scenes, punctuating the otherwise mundane occurrences and building up suspense for the Epic Battle at the end of the book.

I'm really sad the series is over. In a way, it's a pity everything was from Nastasya's perspective, because there are so many interesting characters in these books that you're left wishing you could have gotten to know all of them better.

You got little glimpses into their pasts, like finding out that Daisuke had been a samurai in feudal Japan and that Reyn (who was the only character besides Nas to get any real development) was age-old enemies with River's youngest brother, but they kind of left you wishing for more. In fact, I feel as though Mrs. Tiernan could write an entire series and barely scratch the surface of the fascinating pasts of all the Riverites, as Nas would call them, leaving you feeling like the books could have been longer.

For a book in the young adult genre, there was a lot of sexual...stuff, mostly heavily implied and not very graphic, admittedly, but there.

Overall, loved the books, but I feel like there could have been much more. There were so many interesting characters that never got developed. I loved Nas's narrative voice.(less)

I’m a complete Reyn fan so I don’t really want this series to end…more Reyn please!

Overall I really enjoyed it, but have to admit a few things really bothered me. I felt the end was EXTREMELY rushed. Ok, so overall I really enjoyed this book and thought it fit well with the rest of the series.

I liked him. I felt like he was a little more readable in this book. However, I would have liked a bit more from him. Actually it was more than amazing. I can't stand it how much I loved it. However because of school it took me some days to finish it, because I have exams right now.

During the reading proces I wrote down little notes about what I wanted to say in my review. So I start with the first point. When Ottavio came I was really worried about Nastasya. I didn't want her to feel lost again and friendless. So I was really happy that Lorenz said that the only bad thing Nasty did was her clothes. I mean he...more Actually it was more than amazing. I can't stand it how much I loved it. However because of school it took me some days to finish it, because I have exams right now.

During the reading proces I wrote down little notes about what I wanted to say in my review. So I start with the first point. When Ottavio came I was really worried about Nastasya. I didn't want her to feel lost again and friendless. So I was really happy that Lorenz said that the only bad thing Nasty did was her clothes. I mean he is this hot italian boy with a great fashion check in his head and two hundered and whatever children. I don't know what's so bad about the fact having so much children.. although it's much for his age and because of the fact he never had been a father for them. So yeah it's actually bad. I hope for him he doesn't have to come back to rehab but I think he was a good person in River's Edge and I hope that he is okay. I don't think it's bad that he went away for a save heaven. Some people know when to fly and maybe he thought that he would be a pain in the ass to hang around there and distract people.

Okay next point on my notes was Incy. I still don't know what I think about it. I mean it was goddamnit freaking Incy his head in the package. I know he has been bad lately with that miss Edna stuff and the master but I mean they were bread 'n butter in the beginning. I think before he got al this dark things around him that he was nice. He sounded nice before the cabbie stuff. Same with Daniel. I think it would really hurt to be the midd kid that never was great in anything. You are not the first like Ottavio, you are not as beautiful as Roberto or as strong and whatever as Joshua and you've got this sister who is first very strong and smart and later both things and very good. I feel so sorry for River to endure that. She lost Ottavio and Roberto for good and I just hope Daniel will be okay and turn back to being an annoying on money fixed person.

Nastasya says somewhere at the end of the book that everybody should have a River because that would take a way a lot of therapy and I think that I would love to have a River. I was a bit worried about her at the end that she looked ten years older and lost weight. However I know she is in good hands and I was really happy that Asher would want to marry her. I mean I think they are a lovely couple. I like them both very much. Just as much as I liked Anne and Amy. Solis I didn't like but we all understand why because he was against Nasty and I don't think he has this really good reason because of it. However I didn't wish him death. The moment he looked up because of this save heaven I was kind of angry that he as a teacher wanted to go but right after the death scene of his I think that he knew all that time, that he was not strong enough.

What more do I have to say. I really thought about Nasty her personality and I think it's a bit the same as mine. (Of course I don't have magic and I'm not immortal). HOwever she always thinks bad about herself and because of that she can't actually love Reyn, because you can't love anyone else if you don't love yourself. There are people out there and I can almost include myself that have to take this road and choose everytime again wrong from right. Of course the choices that we have to make are nothing compared to the onces from Nasty but you have those small things. Words you better not say of things you better not do. Don't get me wrong I'm in the small word group. I would never think about killing someone or hurt someone more than with only words.
I don't think about what I say if I'm angry and sometimes I'm to sarcastic that people don't see it as a joke anymore. However Nasty is my inspiration for sarcasm. She became my hero because I love her way of talking to Ottavio. Really good.

I don't know what to say about Ottavio actually. I didn't like him in the beginning because of the way he acted towards Nasty but he was actually only worried and that would be the same for everybody if your beloved sister (or brother) hangs out with someone who might be really dangerous. I wished he survived. He was fun and good. I wished Amy had more change to seduce him because I think that would be a great couple.

The last things I want to note down is that I loved it to see a Dutch sentence in the book. I mean it's indeed the worst phrase ever: It was not my intention. In every possible language. Although the dutch sentence was wrong I didn't care.

I was wondering if someone also figured out that in the beginning when they talk about the accident in Boston, Nasty talks about the death of Katy and Stratton.. I might misunderstood that, however I knew it was Boz. (less)

It took me ages to finish this.

During the first third of the book, I was underwhelmed by all the "Previously in the Immortal Beloved Series..." info dump and the characters talking and behaving with the same obnoxiousness or downright stupidity than before.

And then boredom set in. Nothing seemed to happen until the end of the book when everything went very fast and we got served with a ridiculous sort of epilogue before we even recovered from the whiplash.

Finally having a chance to finish the series I came to love, I love the way it all ended.
1. Plot. With a plot that is fierce and fill of action, I could not hold back. I let myself fall into the story and enjoyed it immensely.

I loved the first two books in this series, but this one definitely did not live up to my lowest expectations. The first book, IMMORTAL BELOVED was so great and offered a unique perspective on immortals and a refreshing main character who is the epitome of an irresponsible teenager (despite her 400+ years). Après avoir lu IMMORTELS - LA TRAQUE, j'attendais de lire le dernier tome de la saga IMMORTELS, qui est l'une de mes sagas préférées. Et même ce dernier opus n'est pas celui que j'ai apprécié le plus, j'ai le coeur brisé à l'idée de quitter définitivement Nasty, Reyn, River, Brynne, Asher, tous les habitants de River's Edge, de quitter l'univers magnifique et insolite d'Immortels.

Quel plaisir de retrouver Nasty, Reyn, River et tous les habitants de River's Edge ! Même si je les avais quitté il n'y a pas très longtemps, ils m'avaient tellement manqué !
Nastasya est égale à elle-même, hilarante, toujours pleine de doute et de questions. Elle se fourre toujours dans de telles situations ! Même dans les pires moments, elle arrive à nous arracher un sourire avec une des réparties cinglantes dont elle a le secret. Elle a toujours ce côté fragile qu'elle essaie de camoufler. Et c'est aussi pour ça que j'aime Nasty. Elle est forte, courageuse, ce n'est pas une pleurnicharde comme on retrouve souvent dans ce genre de livres. Elle ne se laisse pas faire, pas dominer. Elle ne tombe pas les yeux fermés dans les bras de Reyn.
Et quand on parle du loup... Je n'ai qu'une chose à dire. ReynReynReynReynReynReynReynReyn. Reyn. Et encore Reyn. Oh mon DIeu, je suis amoureuse de ce type ! C'est avec Nasty mon personnage préféré. Il est, comme toujours, fou amoureux de Nas, mais celle-ci le repousse. Il est toujours aussi difficile à déchiffrer, mais j'ai eu l'impression qu'il s'ouvrait un peu plus dans ce tome-ci, même si je l'ai trouvé assez distant et droid. Comme pour Nasty, fidèle à lui-même !
J'ai trouvé que leur relation n'était pas assez présente. Le résumé nous laisse présager un tome rempli d'amour passionné, mais il n'y a pas vraiment de ça.
Ah, on a eu droit à de nouveaux personnages ! Je ne vous dirai pas lesquels, je ne veux pas gâcher la surprise !
L'action apparaît assez tard dans le livre. Même très tard, ce qui m'a beaucoup déçue, moi qui m'attendait à une tome rempli de rebondissements et de retournements de situation. Avec un titre qui pète le feu de cette manière (ben quoi, LA GUERRE, ça sonne vraiment déchaîné, enragé, tous ces trucs !), j'ai été vraiment très frustrée de ne pas bouger pendant, quoi ? Les neufs dixièmes du roman ? Car oui, il ne se passe absolument RIEN pendant la presque totalité du roman, et j'ai eu envie de hurler de rage.
Pendant toute notre lecture, on tourne en rond, on tourne et retourne des questions qu'on a déjà vue en long, en large et en travers. On suit la vie de Nasty sans qu'il se passe grand-chose, vaisselles, ramassage des oeufs, cuisines. Des choses qu'on a déjà vécu au moins 498 383 675 362 15262 fois dans les tomes précédents.
Puisque je suis lancée, autant continuer. Alors que j'avais pleuré sous le choc des révélations et des retournements de situation dans les deux premiers tomes, tout ce genre de chose m'a laissé assez indifférente dans LA GUERRE. J'ai vu certaines choses arriver à des kilomètres à la ronde. Bon, pas toutes, mais Cate Tiernan m'a assez déçue sur ce point que j'estime important.
La fin à été un moment d'émotions intenses. On est tenu en haleine, on a peur de ce qu'il pourrait se passer. Je n'ai pas pu m'empêcher de verser quelques larmes en prenant conscience de tout ce qu'il se passait.
Et puis il a la dernier phrase. Le dernier mot. Bon sang, j'en suis encore toute retournée.
Pour conclure, LA GUERRE est certes le tome que j'ai le moins apprécié, mais il m'aura quand même chamboulée. Même si l'action est peu présente, et les retournements de situation pas très surprenants, les personnages et l'histoire sont magnifiques. Cate Tiernan est une auteur de talent qui a donné vie à une merveilleuse saga.
C'est une de mes sagas préférées qui se termine, et je vous conseille cette histoire, rien que pour la beauté des personnages.

Eternally Yours picks up one month after Darkness Falls ends with Nastasya, Reyn and the "family" at River's Edge. As with Darkness Falls, it isn't hard to get back into the plot. The author very skillfully weaves in events from the first two books into this one so the reader isn't left feeling like the first two books needed to be reread.

Finally, more interactions bet. Nasty and Reyn,it was just right not overdone. I really enjoyed Nasty's journey towards her goal of becoming more trusting, being free from darkness and taking on her family's legacy. This was (far and away) the best of the trilogy! I really, really liked this book! Nastasya has grown so much, but she is essentially the same sarcastic (459 year old) teenager, and I love that about her!! I didn't feel like we got enough about the other immortals at River's Edge in this book...there were so many great characters (with really long histories to explore), and we just barely scratched the surface with most of them. I went to school in New York, and after school went back to New Orleans. Then I went back to New York (Manhattan) and got a job in publishing and started writing. My first book, a young, middle-grade chapter book, was published in 1990.

Living in Manhattan was incredible, even though I didn't have a lot of money. There was so much to do and see, and so many interesting people to watch. There was a lot of frenetic energy there, and sometimes that felt very wearing and hard to live with. After eight years I was ready for a change, and my husband and I moved back to New Orleans. (Are you seeing a pattern here?)

(While I was in NY, I helped edit "The Secret Circle" by L.J. Smith. I thought it was great.)

We stayed in New Orleans five years. By the time we had two small children we knew we had to find someplace safer to live. I was glad my children were born in New Orleans--I had been born there, and my father had, and his father had, and his father had and so on. There was something about the connection of generations of blood coming from one place that I found very primal and important.

Now I live in a cohousing community in Durham, NC. This is the most suburban place I've ever lived, and it's very different from living right in the middle of a city. For one thing, there aren't enough coffee shops. However, it's incredibly safe, and the community is very important to me. There are a lot of strong women here, and I find them inspiring.

Am I a witch? Well, no. Even Wicca is too organized a religion for me. I'm much more idiosyncratic and just need to do my own thing, which is kind of new-agey and pantheistic. It's not that I don't work or play well with others, but I need to decide for myself when I do a certain thing, and how I do it. However, I can really relate to Wicca, and I so appreciate its woman-centeredness and its essentially female identity. I love those aspects, among others.

I have several favorite writers. Barbara Hambly has been the biggest influence on how I describe magic. She's an incredibly imaginative and empathetic writer with a gift for creating a rich, sensual world. I love Barbara Pym, an English writer whose books came out mostly in the fifties. She was a master at describing the thousand tiny moments that make up a woman's day; how the seemingly small and inconsequential thing can suddenly take on a huge emotional importance. I greatly admire P.D. James. She's one of the very few writers who makes me actually look up words in the dictionary. She has a beautiful, precise, educated command of the language that leaves me in awe. I love Philip Larkin's poetry. I read a lot of nonfiction and also have some favorite romance writers. Before anyone groans, let me say that these women write really well about women trying to achieve emotional fulfillment, and that's kind of what we're all doing, right? I also just like reading about sex. Anyway, Jennifer Crusie, Susan Elizabeth Phillips, and early Linda Howard are my faves.

And then of course there's my dark side, but more on that later.
