Abai is the greatest Kazakh poet and it's a great book in many ways. Passages picturing the steppe, the way of life there are vivid and tasteful. It's been my favorite winter reading since I was a kid. There is a certain tribute to Communism, of course, but it's not the most important thing about this epic.

Not so much a story, more a journey of a young man into adulthood and a country moving from the nomadic way of centuries to an uncertain future. Lots of unresolved parts of the storyline, which I like because, well life often does not get resolved - unlike in books. And a shorthand for understanding the spirit of the Kazakh people.

excellent read. I read it along time ago, dont' remember much of it.
but it is about his life, thoughts, dreams and ideas.

Abai was great for Kazaks, because he exposed some dark sides of our national mentality, sort of a feedback and point-to to our own weaknesses
