DARK NEBULA picks up a couple of months after RAE OF HOPE, with the start of Rae’s second and last year at Guilder. I have waited so long for Dark Nebula … and the wait was worth every second of it! This is the continuation of the story of Rae Kerrigan and it is absolutely wonderful! I’ve made no secret about how much I enjoyed the first book, Rae of Hope, and I was equally impressed with this book.

The group of teens from book one are all back for another year. Some are back for school, some are now working for the Privy Council. Everyone is developing their tatùs more – including Rae. We get to meet some new characters, but I really enjoyed getting reacquainted with the previous characters. This is something the author has definite talent with, creating these vibrant characters that you want to get to know more. One of the new characters I’d definitely be interested in learning more about, though, is Reece. He’s just a regular ol’ human with no powers, but there is definitely something special there in that boy. I can’t tell you who he is, but I like him. I like him a lot. And I'm hoping he will be around for a while.

Rae is a little bit more cautious, a little bit more “by the rules” - more like Devon. For the most part this personality evolution worked for her, but there were points where I just really wanted to see her let loose with all of her powers. But on the other hand, that is the point of this story – she is learning to show restraint and how to be “good” in the shadow of her father who was most certainly “bad”. Either way, she is a smart girl who is ahead of the game by being a bit paranoid of everyone. If there is one thing she has learned since entering Guilder, is that you can't always trust everyone.

The adult in me really wants to sit Rae down and tell her, “listen, Rae, sometimes you’ve got to speak up LOUD.” when there are situations where she seems to flounder a bit between saying something or not. But I really am seeing this girl grow a bit more, and by the end of this book she is kickin'. The storyline moved at a steady pace and the mystery was top notch. The climactic scenes were powerful and you know it’s a fight til the finish. The stolen kisses between Devon and Rae were perfect in themselves. This is a YA book, so the heat level is very low. Even with that being said, I truly think this is a series for people of all ages. I, for one, can’t even think how many times I’ve wished I’d had super powers. Near daily basis, maybe? Haha. Either way, it’s a fun subject matter with enough twists and turns to keep the reader intrigued. And I definitely think there is more to come in the story.

The cover reveal for this book was this past weekend, and I absolutely love the cover. Rae looks so strong and confident, and powerful. I am more than a bit early with this review, but do yourself a favor and pick up the first book, and then put Dark Nebula on your TBR(less)

There are some books you can only read once. I started reading a couple of weeks ago but had to stop, however, I MADE time to read - not from where I left off BUT right from the start and I didn't get bored. It was like reading the book for the first time again. When I read the first book and found out there was going to be a sequel I was really curious to see how she would carry on the story, but she did so brilliantly! It was like 'Rae of hope' was just the stepping stone to entering this fantastic world and 'Dark Nebula' is the headfirst dive.

We get more depth to the characters, we see different sides to them and we can see how they've advanced in the past year. We're also introduced to new characters - some that seem lovable and others you know are going to be bad news. However towards the end I wish more of the characters were included in the AMAZINGLY suspensed fight scene which had me biting my nails to the core!
Dev and Raes relationship had the classic 2nd book rocky patches but it was still that cute type relationship that makes you go 'nuaaaaah'. There were times Dev really annoyed me and I just wanted Rae to man up and say 'No, I want you to be straight with me and tell me whats going on' but she didn't which made me crazy! I think Raes such an amazing character she manages to stay good no matter what life throws at her and she's a kick ass when it comes to protecting herself and those she cares about but sometimes she needs to grow a backbone with those she loves. She needs to stand up and no be pushed around by them!

The pace was perfect - not too fast and not too slow. I constantly wanted to know what was going to happen next and the plot twists kept me on my toes. I have this habit of guessing whats going to happen and sometimes I guessed correctly but the way they appeared in the book was always surprising. The last few chapters were full of action and I was on the edge of my seat with barely any nails to chew - I LOVE SUSPENSE AND FIGHT SCENES! Rae really steps up and shows us what a strong person she can be despite what she's going through at the time - she's clever and powerful, even when she appears powerless.

The book ends with lingering questions like 'what's happened to certain characters', 'What will Rae do with a certain thing in her possession', 'how many more followers does her father have' and many more AND we have a GREAT last line which will lead to the third quite nicely - I must admit not many last lines make me squeal and I CAN NOT wait until the third installment!

It has a lot more drama and delves into Simon Kerrigan's (Rae's father) evil plans that are being carried out by followers who hold the same beliefs that he did. It's compelling from beginning to end and it's very cool to see Rae getting a handle on her powers and becoming this strong independent girl who others in the boarding school look up to instead of fear. She has really stepped up to the role as a leader. There is quite a bit of secrets and betrayals in this book and that keeps things fascinating and lively. Once again this series feels very Urban Fantasy and I absolutely loved that! Some of Rae's family history is explored further and it's fun unraveling those secrets. Like the first book you'll find yourself flying through this one as it's just as captivating. I was really glad to see some of the same characters return along with some new ones that spring up who are as equally interesting.

Dark Nebula starts off with Rae getting picked up at the airport by Devon. Since Rae of Hope 1 month has passed and summers over thus beginning the new school year with Rae as a senior at Guilder Boarding School. From that month away things have changed and Devon has already adapted to working for the elite organization known as the Privy Council; and Rae has had some time to practice and learn more about her abilities. New students are introduced with even more mysterious powers. Rae and Devon struggle to conceal their relationship from the school which gets pretty difficult and complicated. Rae gets in over her head when she's left out of the loop from the councils plans so she starts gathering information on her own—which leads to some shocking revelations.

There are scenes that felt a little dragged out, and at random times Rae seemed very immature and air-headed which was slightly irritating. Also the story wasn't surprisingly new but I still really enjoyed it for its entertainment and fun aspect. It was very predictable throughout but I didn't mind all that much. The idea of Tatús are absolutely brilliant and clever, W.J. May writes an enjoyable chronicle full of page turning events! Dark Nebula makes a great addition to this enthralling fantastical series. The ending was well done and leaves you with a cliffhanger so I'm looking forward to reading the next book House of Cards!(less)

Typical sophomore slump in my opinion. It wasn't terrible but definitely not as good as Rae of Hope. I was a little disappointed. There were so many frustrating things about this book. I really started to dislike Rae because she didn't seem to have a backbone and let people walk all over her. It seemed like she was alone for most of the book as well where Rae of Hope was filled with other characters that were more interesting. I was a little disappointed. There were so many frustrating things about this book. I really started to dislike Rae because she didn't seem to have a backbone and let people walk all over her. Molly was barely in this book, which was a little disappointing since she's such a vibrant and fun character. The ending was rushed - there was no nice resolution after the major climax of the book. It seemed to cut off kind of abruptly and there's no real mention of a 3rd novel at this point. On the author's website there is a book cover with "House of Cards" as the title so that may be the 3rd book? I really hope there is a 3rd book because there are a lot of unanswered questions.

My biggest frustration with this book was that I found the relationship between Devon and Rae to be really unrealistic and not believable. There is no way that a teenage boy who has spent 10 months fighting and hiding his feelings for a girl, finally confesses his feelings, and after finding out they are mutual spends the next 7 weeks basically ignoring her with 1 or 2 emails as their only contact. But if that were to actually happen, there is no way that the girl would come back after summer break and let him off the hook without some sort of argument and some groveling on his part. But it doesn't stop there, he continues to lie and hide things from her and ignores her for weeks on end while he travels with his new job and yet they are in love by Christmas?! What the hell? How did their feelings grow when they Spent. No. Time. Together.!!! A stolen kiss here or there doesn't make a relationship. I was very frustrated with the 2 of them. She needed to be honest and hash things out with him. He needed to grow a pair and commit to the relationship (breaking rules and all) or end it. Every time she had thoughts of him being "the one" I just couldn't help but ask why she would even think that. She clearly deserves better. Where were all those guys that were fawning over her last year? They would never treat her this badly. Secret or no secret, she needs to be shown that she's a priority to him.

I also disliked him calling her "sweetie". It didn't suit their relationship at all. It seemed weird every time he said that. He could have given her a personalized nickname that suited her - having to do with her tattoo or her power. Even "sunshine" would have been a better term of endearment since her name is Rae and she has that warmth power in her. It's a small thing, but it just bugged me.

I am so SO glad I read book one and two back to back and didn’t have to wait! And now it’s back to school with Rae and Molly, and all the HAWT pieces LOL and we are learning how to use our goodies! It’s just such a fun story to read! And there’s nothing lacking for me. Except that maybe I am, of course, always part of Team dude-that-never-gets-picked. HAHAHA I will keep those to myself though! And even though you’ve got some seriousness to these stories, I find myself laughing a ton!
