Ewen Lamont has grown up in the shadow of his father's reputation. A worthy fighter on the battlefield, Fynlay Lamont's penchant for brawling and drinking made him legendary off it. He was also infamous for stealing his liege lord's bride and nearly bringing ruin upon the family. The last of the Lamonts, his holdings comprising of a mere sliver of land in Cowal, he is tasked with the impossible feat finishing the half-built castle that is his childhood home. Ewen will do whatever it tak...more
This is officially my #1 favorite historical romance series. I'm so in love with the world McCarty has created here, and how each book is more interesting and each story more intensely beautiful than the last.

So sad, now that I've finished reading all the ones that are already out. Book 8 can't get here fast enough!

4.5/5 stars
I keep thinking that the next book in this series cannot possibly get any better and I continue to be wrong (thankfully!). Ewen "Hunter" Lamont was perfectly matched with the fiery Janet of Mar and it was definitely a battle of wills.

Ewen is a proud man of few words and is known as the most skilled tracker in all of Scotland. He's got something to prove and has been loyal to Robert the Bruce's cause from the outset. When he was asked to escort the nun Sister Genna back to the Priory after one o...more
Spies, hot highlanders, a steamy romance, and a setting in the midst of a war torn Scotland. That’s what we get in this fantastic book. The Hunter was a fantastic highlander romance. I absolutely loved it!

I loved how the two main characters were a spy and a member of a secret guard. It made things so interesting, especially considering the turbulence of the time period. When you put two such strong minded and skilled people together, you’re bound to have a ton of fun seeing their battle of wills...more

So, so slow.
I was critical of the last book so I'll be brief(er) for this one.

Repetitive, boring, can't tell if the author is tired or the series is. I am a history fiend but even the historical details slowed down the story. I would have said that any series that goes 8 books is a few too long but Elizabeth Hoyt's and Julie Ann Long's keep getting better. Grace Burrowes is hanging in there. So it has to be this series--how many times can they kill a Brit, or hide in the woods, or make love in...more
Ewen " Hunter" Lamont 's current mission takes him to the bishop of St Andrew to retrieve information for the Bruce only to discover that since he ws late the bishop has sent a nunSister Genna on ahead with the info. Ewen is dumbfounded and horrid hat the Bishop would put a women in danger.Ewen and mcAorley take off after her and when they catch up they find her and her traveling companion being physically attacked by English soldiers, but though the soldiers have ripped Sister Genna's clothing...more
After a failed attempt at rescuing her twin sister, Janet of Mar has been working for Bruce King of Scotland as a spy. She is posing as a nun, currying messages about the English war intent. A vital piece of King Bruce's effort, her plans are interrupted when a handsome highland warrior comes to her rescue...whether she wants it or not.

Ewen “Hunter” Lamont has been serving on King Bruce's elite guard, hoping to restore his family's name and properties. As one of the best trackers in the king's a...more
Monica McCarty writes a brilliant series about two things that ever so popular in the romance genre... Highlanders and special ops.. Can you imagine if there was a Highlander Special Ops force that was able to help Robert the Bruce? Or William Wallace? Or other great kings from Scotland? Would things have been different? Or did they really exist. It is said the Scottish fighting forces were very similar to the Native Americans.. a sort of hit and run, no "honor" in these battles just get in, get...more

Nun on the run.

Seven books in and McCarty manages to produce yet another delicious Scottish hero for readers to devour. One of my favourite species, in fact—the strong, silent type—Ewen was an absolute delight. You know, when he wasn't being a giant pain in my ass.

Famed throughout Scotland for his incomparable tracking skills which earned him the moniker "The Hunter" within Bruce's elite guard, his prowess as a warrior is without question. His social ski...more

It's always a thrill to read a book so exciting, you forget the important things. While McCarty's books always feature a strong female lead, The Hunter's predecessors have nothing on Janet of Mar. This woman has grit unlike any of the other characters I've come across in McCarty's work, and she has the scars to prove it. I didn't think it was possible for McCarty to outdo herself, but she has done so. It feels like everything I ever wanted in a romance novel found its way into this book, making...more
Finished with this series (for now). Just keeps getting better and better. Can't wait for the next book!

Fun book!! Love these highlanders. Review to come.
This is book 7 in the Highland Guard series by Monica McCarty. I have to admit i have not read all the books in this series. I'm usually pretty compulsive about stuff like this too. I have not had the time to go back and read all of them. This is actually only the 2nd one i have read. Some things are not always clear but you can figure it out soon enough and i don't feel too left behind. Once i read the blurb for book 6 The Recruit i was intrigued enough to read it and i enjoyed it so much it st...more

The Hunter is the seventh book in the Highland Guard series by best-selling author Monica McCarty, but can be read as a standalone. This is what I have done, though I have not yet read the other books in the series. (I will.)

This is not going to be a particularly easy review for me because the book was enjoyable enough to read. I enjoy reading historical romance novels from time to time, and I like the happily ever after that most of them offer. This book was no exception. It had wonderful wr...more
This book was more like a Highland Suspense Sprinkled with some romance. The story was really easy to follow, even without starting at the beginning of the series.

Ewen tracker extraordinaire can find Sister Genna/ Janet of Mar anywhere she goes.. and thank goodness for that!
Janet's smooth talking capabilities help her weasel out of a number of dangerous situations! But when she least expects it Ewen the Hunter finds her and keeps her safe... even from herself.

The Hunter is a great continuation of the already stellar Highland Guard series. As a devoted fan of Monica McCarty, I have been faithfully following this series since the beginning. Never missing a release day, and never failing to be amazed at how the writer keeps the long running series fresh and unique. Rich in historical detail, each novel is different in plot and circumstance. For these extraordinary warriors and the remarkable women they love, it is a world of exciting adventure as they f...more

I love reading about Highland Warriors, and their ladies, and this story is no exception, with a twist. The lady in this novel is also a warrior!

Ewan Lamont is one of Robert Bruce's elite army. He is known as Hunter, and is the groups best tracker and "finder" of men. He and his partner Eoin MacLean have been sent to find a nun, Sister Genna, who is a courier in the Church's attempt to pass secrets to the Scots regarding the English army. The English have been tightening scrutiny of friars, prie...more

I loved seeing Hunter meet his match in Janet. Getting to see the two of them accept their flaws and overcome the challenges they faced as a couple was great. The action and drama of their escapes and escapades was well written and full of danger and fear for their lives. Seeing all the other members of the Guard come together to support Hunter and getting glimpses of the lives they are leading is awesome too. Ewen and Janet come together in a shower of sparks exploding across the page with pass...more

I don't know about the previous books of this series, but I liked this one. I am not a fan of historical romance usually, believe me, but once I was hooked in the story I surprised myself wanting to know how it will end and if there will be an Ever happy ending for the characters. Sometimes I skipped passages but that's just me with that sort of books I think (at the beginning especially).

Janet isn't acting like a "normal" woman at this epoch. She does what she want...more
Janet DeMar is the sister-in-law of Robert Bruce, King of Scotland. The war with England is still going on and Janet has been acting as a currier for Bruce. She disguises herself as a nun which has enabled her to move through the country side with little problems. However, her cover has been discovered and she ends up in hiding. Bruce realizes that she has not check in and he sends one of his elite guards to find her and bring her back in.

(REVIEWR'S NOTE: I received this book from the author in exchange for an honest review. I REALLY liked this book!!)

This is my first McCarty novel, and it surely won't be the last! Furthermore, I definitely want to catch up by reading the previous books in this great series!

As is evident from the "Author's Note" at the end of the book, McCarty has done her research well. This novel is based on real people. The Lamont family really existed, and one of them was even named Ewen. Robert the Bruce wa...more

I love the Highland Guard series but this one was the worst for me. The Recruit was my favorite so I ran out and got this one on release day. It seemed like an interesting plot with Janet being a courier and pretending to be a nun but in the first 50 pages or so I knew it was not the same as the rest of her novels.

To start out the first time Ewen meets "Sister Genna" she is topless. Right away he has over the top lust for her before a word is even said. From there we spend a lot, and I mean a lo...more

Captivating and Breathtaking 7 stars!
I just finished reading The Hunter, very well written by Monica McCarty, her 7th novel in her Highland Guards series. Ms. McCarty has done it again and proved that is one of the best medieval writers I have known. I am fascinated with her writing that gets me addicted to read her book non-stopping! Once I started, I really got hooked in this amazing adventure. It is one of the best Scottish stories that I have read in a long-time, captivating, as I love them!...more

The Hunter by Monica McCarty is the 7th book in her Highland Guard series. It’s the first book I’ve read in the series and I had no problems following the characters and plot. It is an enjoyable read that will have you following along as Ewen and Janet travel a treacherous journey to help aid the cause of King Robert the Bruce. There is suspense, drama, action and romance. Ewen is a great gruff and tough hero and Janet is a wonderfully smart and independent heroine. Their romantic path...more
What I love about Monica McCarty and her Highland Guard series is that I get both a well researched story and a hot romance all in the same book. And I was not disappointed in this book. It's one of my favorite in the series so far. Ewen LaMont is known as The Hunter in the highly secretive Guards and he is a taciturn and gruff warrior. He meets Janet Mar as she is masquerading as a nun and also secretly working as a courier in the war effort of Robert the Bruce. She is a delight and turns Ewen'...more

I adore this book, so well written and researched. Every time i read one of Monica's books it's another lesson about the amazing highlanders and there history.

I loved both the characters and they dialogs and how Ewen is trying to fight his attraction to Janet thinking she is a nun.

Janet is such a strong woman, a true scot, trying to fight for her country and help them in the way she can against the english.

Once again Monica McCarty proved to us wot an amazing author she is and how well she ca...more

I loved this installment in the Highland Guard series. I think this is one of my favorites, if not my favorite. I love a good star-crossed lovers tale.

Janet was a great heroine. She was a chatterbox, and she was good at telling tall tales to get out of trouble. In other words, she was a terrific liar. I'd usually find such an outspoken and at times obnoxious heroine to be really annoying, but her outrageousness fit in with the storyline. She had to do just about anything to remain incognito in d...more

My favorite historical romances (Highlanders)

I chose this rating because of all the intrigue and the way this story highlighted another way which wars are fought.

Janet is a very strong character and is determined to help Robert the Bruce in any way that she can. And delivering important information to Bruce and his guards is something that she can do for the war and it helps to atone for the guilt she thinks she deserves.

Ewen has a very hard time dealing with women doing anything to help with wi...more

What do you get when you mix a legal career, a baseball career, motherhood, and a love of history with a voracious reader? In my case, a Historical Romance Author.
